Colour Scheme Decisions

l.jo-swansea, 17 April, 2008 at 14:51 Posted on Planning 0 17

How do people decide on the colour schemes? Do you choose a colour then get everything to match or find bridesmaid dresses you like then get everything to match around that?

I have booked the venue and registrar and I feel as if I cant make any other decisions until I know what kind of colour I'm going for

Any ideas??? I am getting married on a beachfront hotel in June 09 and I have quite pale skin and blonde hair. My bridesmaids are brunette with darker skin colouring. Any suggestions welcome...

I was doing all my research when we first got engaged and fell in love with the dark purple calla lillies.

As I wanted to go with those as our 'main' flowers and I had gone for an ivory dress it was easy to then set the colour scheme as dark purple and ivory.

    HTH ?

Well for me I have picked out my favourite colours, and worked around that.
Do you have any colouring on your dress at all ie embroidery etc, or have you seen the venue? you could always pick out colours from there or take it from your Bridesmaid dresses.

I was orginally going for teal bridesmaid dresses , saw them in debenhams & loved them, but having 5 bm's some where not too happy & i didn't want them to be uncomfortable. I went into a bridal shop & saw these black dresses & thought thats the one & all the bm's loved them , so black , white & silver it was , never thought i'd go for black , i was looking at every colour but?.I sometimes do wonder if i should have stayed with teal , i love it

We did everything backwards.....or so i'm told!

All i knew was that i wanted an 'elegant/classy' type look. And absolutely NO pink/hearts/fluff.

Was always pretty sure i'd have an ivory coloured dress, so pretty much anything would go.

Went shopping for BM dresses with my CBM and we pretty much came to a decision at the same time (albeit separately!) that choc brown dresses would be lovely. Got her to try on all sorts of dresses, and other colours too, but brown was the winner, and once we saw the dress, we knew that was the one!!! Have loosely based colours around that!

Decided to stay pretty neutral, so i'm in ivory with coffee coloured embroidery and beading, BMs are choc brown, boys crevats are coffee and waistcoats are ivory and gold.

Wanted to add a 'splash' of colour and opted for burnt orange as it sets it all off, and looks good at the time of year i get married (end of sept), and amazingly looks pretty darn fabby with me being a gingernut too! Kinda ties everything in together in a weird sort of way!

Not sure if that helps in any way as i've pretty much just waffled on again, but best thing i can suggest is maybe go shopping with an open mind and try all sorts! I'd never have thought of brown unless we'd tested it out!?

Thanks everyone. I haven't picked my own dress yet but I want just a simple plain white one. Although I have seen dresses I like where they put a ribbon/sash around the bride's dress to match the bridesmaid's. So i thought again I need to know the colour I want before I finialize my dress.

The venue where the reception is being held had green chairs and green tablecloths etc (but these cane be easily changed) Cant remember the colour of the curtains that cant be changed! Thing is my mother (who has a lot of say since she is paying for the majority) doesnt want green because she thinks its bad luck!! I would have quite happliy gone with this to make it easy

I quite like platinum silver and dark colours like claret/plum but have been told these are more for winter weddings. I think I might do what duck no more did and ask for bridesmaid's opinions to help with the decision!

Oh no Lolou, I think I am going to have exactly the same problem! My mother thinks green is bad luck too and I know she will say that when I suggest it for my BMs! She always goes on about how my car always breaks down because it is green ?

My fiance is building a 1960s sports car which will be in the blue its famous for. Although hes not decided on which shade of blue, I'm looking at Navy or French navy.... dont mind that its a summer wedding as the blue is also in his tartan.

We picked pink and chocolate brown because we both got to choose a colour and I love pink and H2B thought brown would go well.
Fortunately the colours go quite well with the reception venues rooms which have since been refurbed since we booked and the brown is a good match.

We don't have one, and I couldn't even tell you what colour the venue's walls are.

Everything is quite muted, so it all 'matches' in its own bizarre way.

Well thought out! Just in case they decide to have some hanky panky and she strips down to her knickers and he ties her up!

    Good thinking!

Ours is dictated by my dress colour - which is deep red - so had to come up with something that would go... we've settled on a silver/oyster type colour for BMs with the men in black suits and some combination of silver/red for waistcoat, cravat etc. and flowers in redish generally autumny colours. ?
