Colour scheme dilema!

MrsSoonToBeD, 29 May, 2014 at 14:00 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi all,

It's my first post on here as a newly engaged and soon to be wedding planner!

We are not looking to get married until 2016, however being the super organised person that I am, I'm already thinking far ahead with the plans! We have a couple of venues chosen and the time of year we are looking at (either June or late September time) but are just waiting to view these before confirming the big day.

My problem at the moment is, is I am trying to decide on a colour scheme to start thinking about save the dates/invitations etc as I plan to make all these myself. I was thinking either a duck egg blue colour, or alternatively a greyish pink. I have been looking all over online for duck egg coloured bridesmaid dresses to make sure that before I go ahead with a colour scheme, that I can get nice dresses in that colour (ideally full length and one shouldered). I haven't had any joy and was looking for people's opinions on which colour to go for. I think either would look fab as I love the paler coloured bouquets/flowers and these would go with both!

If anyone had any ideas on dresses/colour schemes it would be much appreciated :-) thanks very much!

p.s sorry about the essay!!

    Hello & welcome to hitched!

It can be tricky to commit to a colour scheme so far in advance (personally, I have abandoned on 'set' colours)

Could you use both colours? Sounds like you are a fan of pastel, gentle colours (correct me if I'm wrong)!

For save the dates and invites, you could use a range of colours that go together, and then as you get nearer the time, you could pick and accentuate a colour or two from that for dresses, tables etc.

I ended up changing my colour scheme ideas after I fell in love with a champagne coloured wedding dress, that wouldn't have looked too similar to my original plan of dusky pink for bridesmaids (with gold and cream making up the rest of the colour scheme). I've now gone for claret/burgundy BM dresses as the contrast with the champagne is lovely Smiley smile If you're sure you're going to wear white or ivory then I guess it makes it easier, but I'd suggest choosing your dress first before committing to anything else.

I did monochrome Save the Dates which might work for you if you haven't decided on a colour scheme.

Ours was actually a black and white photograph giving a clue as to our venue, but what I've seen done which is lovely is to use a photograph of the two of you and with print details on the back, or fade it into the background and print on top. Then you'll have free rein on planning your colours, as the Save the Date won't really match at all!

Oh also, hello, and welcome to the madhouse! ?

Ohh I'd be so tempted to have both the duck egg blue and the pale grey pink!! I think they could work really well together with splashes of silver or even whites/ creams!

Somethimes I think you really need to book a venue and work with your space for a colour scheme as you wouldn't want to have say an orange carpet and then put purple with it! Not saying your venue has an orange carpet was just usein it as an example.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I'm only just getting round to responding! Being so busy at work etc has reminded me why I've started planning so early!!

I agree it is difficult to set a colour scheme before choosing my venue. We are going to set the date/venue next month and can go from there :-) In the meantime I've bought the lace etc for my save the dates/invites as regardless of which colour I go for I'll be using white lace! Far too excited for it still being so far away! :-D

Thanks again for all the help! xx

I love duck egg blue and really wanted it. The problem is that there is a LOT of variation between shades/tones which can make getting hints to co-ordinate tricky and expensive. Some examples had more blue hunter tones whilst others green despite being labelled the same colour. I ended up not having that colour mainly because it did not look great on my bridesmaids and I wanted them to be happy.

In terms of bridesmaids dresses Dessy have an icelandic colour which is essentially duck egg blue and would have been my choice. We found a few places like coast and phase eight stocked the odd dress but they were few and far between. So we ended up looking at the more expensive bridal shops. So just bear this in mind when making a budget. Sometimes it is paired with a pink/peach shade so you could look at combing colours and using it as an accent. Good luck x

    Sorry for all the typos!

    Hints = things

    hunter tones = undertones

Dessy make a very varied range of bridesmaid dresses in a very large amount of colours, so you could choose probably whatever colour scheme you like, then buy dresses to match it.

Lots of wedding shops stock Dessy.

We ordered 2 different dress styles in the same colour, so BM's could have dress that suited them individually, but still have the same colour.

    Ahhh fab! thank you!

I have just had a look at the Dessy site and the 'icelandic' colour they do and that's exactly the colour I want! I was also thinking that as there are a lot of different variations of duck egg blue, I could possibly get away with some things being a different shade (a slightly different shade anyway).

I was also considering my chief bridesmaid being in a different style dress (something with a neckline) and my others being in strapless. Not too sure how it would look though! Dessy is great!!! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :-)

    You're welcome.

Takes about 8 weeks to get the dresses, as the shop will have to order them from Dessy, then they get shipped over from America.

    Ours look fab.
