Coloured tights at work ?

The White Rabbit, 15 October, 2008 at 16:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Https://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/ has made me think about wearing coloured tights with plain black dress / black dress and black jumper for work as a way of being a bit more colourful / fashionable (bearing in mind I work in a fairly traditional office)

Question is whether I'll look unprofessional / like mutton dressed up as lamb / if M&S selling coloured tights means its last year's fashion and people will laugh and point

Help Hitched fashionistas please !

A work colleague of mine was spotted in a black dress and fuschia pink and patterned tights the other day. She's a lot more clothes concious than I am, and always has amazing shoes (when she hasn't taken them off because her feet hurt, that is).

I was thinking of doing the same thing - which is obviously of no help to you as fashion guru I'm not!

I have, however been paying attention to people out and about and it seems quite prevelant here but NYC and London aren't always on the same fashion trends.

I wear it quite a lot, no idea if its on trend, I just love coloured tights.

However, my work has a 'smart casual' dress code, so by wearing a skirt at all, I'm usually one of the most smartly dressed there.

I have some purple argyle print tights that I love and I am planning to get some more coloured ones soon. I tend to prefer ones that have some sort of ribbing or pattern otherwise I feel like I look as though I've spray painted my legs.

I wear coloured (mainly dark purple) tights for work. I also wear lots of black in various patterns.

Is your office business casual or business proper? If the former then I think coloured tights would be fine. if the latter, I'm not sure I'd wear them- I'm always a bit wary of anything "fun" in a formal context like that (a bit like men wearing "fun" ties- never a good idea). If you're being smart and formal, be smart and formal. I also think anything very noticable like that risks making you "the woman with the remarkable tights" to any old buffers you deal with (rather than "the woman with the remarkable brain"). But I think I am quite traditional about such things and come from probably the most traditional profession when it comes to dress.

I wear coloured tights to work, but then I work in a casual environment. I think they could look really smart with a black dress if you work somewhere more formal.

I LOVE wearing coloured tights to work. I confess to quite a collection!

Pamela Mann is my favourite tights maker person. The other day I had a real binge on internet tight buying. I brought a blue pair with black pirate skulls printed on ( that I am wearing now), a pair with cats on the back that look like they have scratched a ladder in the tights, a pair of pink fishnets called "twister", and a black pair that look like a zip is running up the seam.

    I LOVE crazy tights.

Oh! I bought the cat ones on Saturday and wore them to work today! They went down a storm and I have a pair with paw prints all overthem for tomorrow!! I think women can get away with much more than men when it comes to 'fun with the dress code, last year I went through a pahase of wearing all black - with red shoes and the most out landish jewellry I could find, and everyone thought I loked glam! Just go with what feels right, if you don't feel out of place you hit it in the head!

Never having worked in a 'traditional office', I have no idea what the code is on dress, but surely you could wear something like the outfit on that page? Or suits in colours other than black?

I love coloured tights but very rarely find them in my size Smiley sad

I wear them-deep plum, blue etc. Opaques and patterned . Makes a nice change from black and gives a little lift to a plainer/sober outfit, imo.

I vaguely remember you work in the City? I do too and saw 2 or 3 girls today with coloured tights. I do think that the City is way more relaxed than it used to be in its dress codes. I'm planning on doing this look, and if so will make sure that the rest of my outfit is conservative/smart, and my hair groomed.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Knownowt makes a very good point about not wanting to be known as the girl with the tights ...

Think I shall take some in on Friday to change into for cocktails and dinner with my fabulous friend and keep black for the office along with my black dress - see how that feels and then if its a less formal day perhaps I'll think about it when I see how it feels (that said not wearing tights or a suit felt like a big step at the time ?)
