Common misunderstandings!!

Erin8, 9 August, 2014 at 23:05 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 62

Which things are common misunderstandings do you think?

Why do people think Ian Brady is dead? I did a poll at work today and it was 50/50 whether he was dead or alive

Cannabis isn't bad for your health. Hmm l have met too many people with drug induced psychosis etc for that to be true

The their / there / they're thing. I know it's more of a spelling / punctuation issue but 2 colleagues today used completely the wrong one

On route instead of en route. It really annoys me.

I get confused between Gandalf and Dumbledore

I thought for a long time that you had to be rough sleeping to sell The Big Issue but actually you dont -you can be housed & still sell it.

I just bought my dad the QI Book of Ignorance for his birthday, it lists common facts people get wrong all the time, e.g. that Henry VIII had six wives .. he didn't!

Mostly it's just being pedantic but it's a good read. I wish I had it here now so I could plagiarise it and make myself sound clever!

It's a stupidly pedantic one - all to do with the legalities of marriage etc etc

Oh yes, this rings a bell actually. It is a tad pedantic though!

IIRC, Henry had all but two of his marriages (to Jane Seymour and Catherine Parr) annulled, rather than divorced, so technically they never happened.

He annulled his marriages to Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard shortly before having their heads cut off. Charming.

This annoys me more than it should.

I don't like it when people say "the hoi polloi". "Hoi" means "the". I am probably being unreasonably pedantic there though!

Ex presso bugs me too! The one that winds my brother up the most is people adding an s to the end of supermarket names! Tescos, asdas, etc. Hehe, my dad does it on purpose to wind him up!

We watched a thing about the Moors Murders last week and H said to me "How did Ian Brady die?" and I didn't think he was dead. I had to Google it to be sure though.

    "PIN number"

No, it is a PIN. A Personal Identification Number. Not a Personal Identification Number number.

This is a misunderstanding - cannabis IS bad for your health. What is also a misunderstanding is that cannabis is as bad for your health as some think. The research consensus is that it isn't as bad as alcohol and it doesn't act as a gateway drug.

I do the dead thing a lot. Someone will come up on TV and Boy and I will make a bet about whether they are dead or not.

    My bugbears:

    1. Cloning an individual will not create an exact copy of the individual.

    2. Sushi is not raw fish.

    3. In science, a "theory" is not a tentative idea of what might be happening, it is a description of a set of principles.

    4. Agnosticism is not the middle ground between believers and atheists.

My biggest annoyance is anything that claims to be "chemical free". Everything is made of chemicals, even you and I. Granted, some chemicals are better for you than others but nothing is chemical free.

Also that something that is "natural" is better for you than something that isn't. I acknowledge there are plenty of man-made chemicals that are not good/toxic, but there are also "natural" chemicals that are equally toxic.

Brought/Bought. I cannot understand how these two are always mixed up.

"I brought a new dress the other day" - did you, where did you bring it from?

    Buy = bought

    Bring = brought

On a similar but slightly different tangent...

Why are receive and deceive spelt similarly, but receipt has a "p" and deceit doesn't?

Good point l should have also mentioned that alcohol is bad for your health -both physical and mental. A lot of people are in denial about this.

We do the dead / alive bet thing. Mr Erin still maintains Edwin Collins is dead. I pointed out he toured a while back so how can he be dead?!

Choose and Lose infuriate me. Why is Lose not spelt like Choose? Surely it would make more sense to swap the spelling of loose and lose?

    Chose!? It blows my mind.

Other silly spellings - where I come from, there are three places called Woughton, Broughton, Loughton, pronounced "woof-ton" "braw-ton" and "lau-ton"

Had plenty of these from my time in Norfolk. Happisburgh (pronounced Hazeborough), Cley (pronounced Cly), Wymondham (pronounced Windham) to think of a few.

I hate it when people say 'two times faster' - is there a rule that you can't say twice as fast anymore? Another one I don't get is when people say 'half of one percent' - why can't it be half a percent?

Oh, another one is when people call the outside lane on a motorway the fast lane when it's 70mph in all 3 lanes.

So, in your own words, for you, 'next Saturday' means 'the Saturday after [the] next [Saturday to come]'? And you think your method is somehow perfectly logical? Smiley winking

I'm not saying my way of seeing it is perfectly logical, but most people Iv asked have said the way I see it is right. In a way I think it depends on where in the week we are. Say it's said on a Sunday I may assume it means the Saturday in 6 days, but if it's said on a Thursday I'd assume it's in 9 days time.

Its so confusing in our house haha!

I get this. If it is the closest Saturday to come, you should just say "so and so is coming on Saturday". By adding in an unnecessary "next" it's confusing. I question this too. But then I also struggle to distinguish my lefts and rights, as in my head it changes every time you turn around. I have to pretend I am playing the piano, circa 1993, to work out which is which
