About my DJ

I found him through yell - checked out his website etc sent him an enquiry etc I was happy with his answers so I have booked him for the wedding and sent the cheque for the deposit but now Im abit worried if ive made the right choice - he hasnt sent me a contract etc although he did send me Terms and Conditions, only after i asked, I also made the cheuqe out to the company but apprantly I was ment to make it out to him personnally - he emailed me and asked if he sent the cheque back could i send him another but made out to him personally, I said yes no problem (although afew alarm bells are going off here anyway) that was about 2 weeks ago and still no cheque in the post - I had a email today saying that he will be processing the cheque as soon as his NEW bank account has been set up - Im thinking a) is this a real buisness b) the fact that he said he would process the cheque as soon as his NEW bank account has been set up and that he hopes I find this satisfactory which came across to me as abit of an attitude?? or am I just reading to much into this?? The cheque isnt for very much and we can stop it at the bank anyway - I just dont know if Im being sensitive or if I am finding some attitude in his email - it seems like he has had to go out of his way to set up this NEW bank account (as he kept typing NEW in capitals) when it wasnt my fault he didnt tell me to write it out to anyone else and I said I would write another one - I just want the original back first!!

Help ?

I would contact the bank and cancel both cheques so they can't be cashed.

It does sound a bit off to me. I would have though he would have told you to make the cheque out to him if that's the way he wanted it but why go to the trouble of setting up a new bank account when you had agreed to sort that out? Think I would definitely cancel the cheque and the booking and find another dj...

More oft than not, if someone asked for a cheque to be made out to them personally, it's because of two main reasons:-

    a) They don't have a business bank account

    b) They are not registered with the taxman!

I would be tempted to ask for testimonials of work he has done for other Brides and give them a ring. He may be new into the business but normally, you set up business bank accounts and all the legalities before taking money off customers otherwise your books are all to pot and the taxman won't be a happy bunny!

    Hope that helps. Brenda

Don't hesitate....cancel both cheques immediately. He could be perfectly genuine and just a little disorganised......but you need to have a copy of a signed contract else you haven't a leg to stand on. I always give my clients two copies with both our signatures on and we each retain a copy. As well as being a guarantee that you have bookked him and he is committed to your event, having a contract also helps to ensure that you both have the details correct and there can be no discrepency about date, times, venue, etc. Unfortunately I;ve had too many calls in the past from desperate brides, so am too aware of things that go wrong. I don't think its a problem writing a cheque out to the DJ's name rather than his company as a lot of us are sole operators so don't have company accounts.....but not having a contract is a major problem.

    Hi everyone -

Thanks so much for your advice and Sandy for your advice being in the industry. As we dont have a contract with him them I guess I can just email him saying we would rather not use his services cancel the cheques and find someone else!!

    Thanks again

As a small trader you don't have to have a business bank account and if you do banks charge you huge amounts of fees. The inland revenue have no requirement for you to have a business bank account, so I wouldn't let that influence your decision. Also it is easy to misread intentions in emails. However a contract is the real issue here

Yeah, i went on the website on wednesdayy and saw sat was sold out so i thought best to order them.... were travelling down from Scotland so didnt want to risk coming downall that way to not get in!!!! :-) Never been to one b4 so im really excited x

Hope you manage to sort DJ out ok! Definatly cancel the cheques out though... then you can still do what Rainbow suggested, then you could always wright him another cheque if your happy with the outcome?

You would have thought having a law degree in which we covered contracts obv I was asleep ( I did actually fall asleep in equity and trusts so it may well have happened in contact law lol)

I would suggest if it doesnt feel right now then cancel the cheque and find someone else. It may be genuine, maybe hes a new business and is only just setting up a business account but you dont want to be worrying about it from now until your wedding. x

For what it's worth if he's a sole trader he doesn't have to a seperate bank account. I've been trading since 2003, I do have a seperate bank account but they are in my name rather than the business name (although the too are similar).

Not everybody does contracts, some just to terms and conditions..

Sounds to me like he was just checking it was OK to still cash the cheque, which was nice if he hadn't cashed it after a couple of weeks. That's what I read from the satisfactory bit anyway.

two weeks this time of year can fly by, lots of weddings going on, he could just be up to his eyeballs in work.
