Confirmed case of swine flu in my office

WelshTotty, 16 July, 2009 at 13:16 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

Great, just had an email from accomodation tell us that someone in the Jobcentre (we share a building) on the 1st floor (the floor we have our offices on and share the toilets with) has been confirmed with a dose of Swine Flu. Story is her 6 year old daughter has been confirmed to have it, and she decided even though she had symptoms to come into work yesterday and today and has just been confirmed with it herself, which has caused what can only be described as major panic in the rest of the building.

She has been sent home and a sooper dooper cleaning regime has now been put in place for the whole building. I think we should be ok as for the past week or so our boss has issued us all with boxes of antiviral tissues (for sneezin and coughing into!) and we have had an anti bacterial hand pump foam thingy installed in the entrance to our office suite, which everyone is using.

Heres hoping none of us get it because of the sillyness of someone elses actions.

Ho hum.

Urgh, people being martyrs and struggling in to work when they're clearly ill drives me up the wall at the best of times.

Hope you manage to avoid it, WT.

Gah, I can't believe the stupidity of some people with things like this.

I really hope you and your colleagues don't get it x

Tulip I couldnt agree more, If im ill, like a really bad cold, I stay off work for a few days so I dont give it to everyone else. We are a small set up of 10 people, if we all catch something at the same time no work gets dont at all.

Han we are all quite chilled out here to be honest, as we have done all we can to avoid nasties infecting us, if its out of ours hands then thats that. Jobcentre staff however are all in panic mode.

A guy in my office was ill at work on Friday and I think he has it although they aren't testing for it here any more. All that's been done here is they handed out a couple of bottles of antibac hand wash (I'm using it but mainly becuase it's nice and cucumbery), a box of tissues and a pack of antbac surface wipes (yet to be opened).

What's the obsession with anti-bac stuff? I though soap enough to kill a virus?

The husband of one of the girls I work with is suspected of having swine flu, he has been tested and results are awaited. It's a pain for him and I expect it's not going to be much fun for his missus either as she currently has a sore throat.

She has told the partners but as of yet nothing has changed at all (no cleaning/anti bacterial stuff or anything). I think it's a case of wait and see and if it does turn out to be swine flu it's better for the staff to be ill now in the summer when we're less busy than in the autumn when things start to pick up again. ☹️ Having said that I seem to manage to avoid colds/flus and bugs in general - or my immune system manages to fight them off without any trouble, so i'm hoping to be absolutely fine.

We've had 3 people in our company confirmed with it, all on differnt floors (we're spread over 3 floors) and one of them is the cleaner! Que mass hysteria.

We now have those hospital-esque anti-bac hand cleaners on every door in the building, and are desks are cleaned daily, along with phones.. etc ..The main worry is that we have a re-circulated air system rather than air-con, so people in my office are all convinced it's going to spread like wildfire cos we breathing in 'dirty air'.

It's not good. We're all wondering who's going to get it next, so to speak, and every time someone coughs or sneezes they get 'the look'.

Trying not to panic though, but it's getting closer and closer. But if one in three of us is set to get it before Xmas I'd rather have it now.

    R.

I guess its more convienient than having to go to the washbasin all the time so people tend to use it more. I usually have some on my desk just to freshen up now and again!!

If it makes you feel any better my OH was diagnosed at the start of last week and the three of us were house bound for a week. Even in that close contact neither me nor our son caught it.

    It's very convenient.

I use it when I don't have easy or any access to a sink, soap and water eg before eating when on the move.

Besides, not all loos have soap, let alone something to dry your hands with.

I think all the hand wash things that don't need water are anti-bac by default aren't they?

I have no idea. I've never used it. I can see that it could be convenient though, but would be wary of using low-level anti-bac stuff if not necessary.

Oh my, talk about overload, we have just had a team of 6 cleaners descend upon us with buckets of stuff (that smells lovely) literally cleaning every surface in sight. Oh and we have been issued with telephone sanitiser wipes too. lol

We came in on Monday to find anti-bac gel dispensers in the building reception and by all the lifts and the security turnstiles. On everyone's desks were huge tubs of surface disinfectant wipes - they're for food preparation areas.

It's a little bit of overkill!

I have lots of different respirators for sale, Nuclear/Bio/Chem protective clothing and a wide range of decontamination products... Like, are you able to ensure that your car (up to about 55tons) is free of contamination? If not I accept cash, personal cheques, postal orders and paypal.

It was announced at work today that there are several unconfirmed cases amongst the workforce. I imagine they'll wait for a confirmed diagnosis before they take any further action. With our awful air circulation system it would probably be round the building in minutes. ?

We've had two cases confirmed in a building of nearly 500 people. There are now various anti bac hand gels in strategic points, and the cleaners are cleaning the door handles. Although only on one side of the door, interestingly!

To be honest, I'm exposed everytime I get on the train, I'm sure.... so I'm just taking sensible precautions and trying not to panic.

(Although part of me wants to get it now. I just have this awful feeling that I'll get it just before the wedding if I'm going to get it at all!)

There are another 15 confirmed cases in my son's school, it's the last day of term tomorrow and I'm keeping him off, the less exposure he has the better even if it's only 1 day.

    I hope everyone stays healthy.

If it's any consolation to anyone, we had several confirmed cases in our office (over two floors), but there haven't been any further cases all week - if there are no more by Monday, I'm going to venture back into the office...
