Considering not having a wedding cake

Mrs_imp, 4 October, 2011 at 12:41 Posted on Planning 0 27

We aren't really cake people, I love the way they look but never really eat proper cake. Do you think it matters if we don't have one?

There are other options! Do you like cheese?

A cake will be expected by many guests, but it's not the end of the world if you don't have one.

Have you considered one of the alternatives like cupcakes, or a stack of cheeses?

I guess not, it does seem to be an expected part of the wedding, but you don't have to do it.

If you don't like cake, how about a cheese tower (I think these are amazing, but then I love cheese!). I went to one wedding where they had a pork pie cake consisting of 3 massive pork pie layers made specially with a selection of condiments, it was brilliant, and yummy!

How about having a dummy cake? Just have it for show.

    You can hire them here:

I love cheese, my Oh not so much. I was just thinking perhaps it was a way to save a little money by not having a cake, do you think people will think it strange?

You could always emulate the Ambassador's Reception and have a big stack of Ferrero Rocher Smiley smile

A great idea Sherrie , I just wonder if it replaces the cake, as in for cutting purposes or is an additional desert IFYKIM?

We have been to weddings that had cheese 'cakes' and they were decorated with grapes and flowers. Looked lovely and guests were able to help themselves to it with crackers at the evening reception (I was sat right by it though and it did stink!). We also went to one were the couple had a profiterole mountain (yummy) and it doubled up as pudding. We have seen cupcake stacks but not really any good if you aren't keen to have cake. Have also come across jelly 'cakes' and sweetie 'cakes'. People have mentioned tiers of pork pies on here as well!

I think there is an expectation to have a wedding cake but it is your wedding, so you should have (or not have) whatever you and your OH want.

You could just have a bottom layer as a cheescake for dessert & then guests can pick at the fruit throughout the day & evening.

Plenty of other options as folk have posted. It is not really just about you not liking cake, lots of people coming might love wedding cake and it is good to put out with the buffet at night. I bought a £200 rose chocolate cake from marks and neither myself or my husband ate any on the day but loads of comment were made about how nice it was. If i had not had a cake sitting out throughout the meal and until it was cut at night i would have felt that there was something missing.

Speaking as a cake maker,so obviously I am biased, its your choice but you have a lot of guests who will like cake so maybe you should cater for them ? Mostly cakes are used for the dessert with the evening buffet so you are providing towards the catering as well.

Our ceremony is at 4, we then have cananpes and fizz, and the WB will be at 6.30/7.00. We will be serving a desert with the WB which is included in the price, and we don't get any discount if we exclude this, not that I really want to as it sounds nice. Because everything is later we wont be having an evening buffet as there will only be 3 hours between when people finish eating the WB and go home, and no evening guests as it will be abroad.

I hear what you are saying that people "expect" there to be a cake to be cut, and I guess we may reconsider based on this. I just don't want to pay for something we don't really want, particularly if it doesn't get eaten. My mum thinks that we should have a cake as again, people will expect it!

You could just have a small one tier cake - it wont cost much and for the people 'expecting' a cake they'll be happy? It's your day but I'm guessing you want to please as many as your guests as well so that may be a solution?

How about Krispy Kreme doughnuts? We had hardly any left after our reception, everybody loved them! We cut on in half as the 'cutting of the cake' and made two menus to stand up next to it so that everyone knew which flavours they were.

I'm not a lover of fruit or sponge cake and nor is my partner so we have decided on lemon & vanilla cheesecake instead.

Sorry to reboot an old thread although I was alerted to the link below. The content has been mentioned in other threads, although the option to personalise it makes it even more wedding friendly....

    Hi,

My daughter had a 3 tier dessert for theirs. It was served on a cake stand and used after the meal as the dessert. Went down very well.

People might notice for 2 mins then they'll forget about it. We had a giant chocolate cake but if you're not bothered then people will get over it. I've seen macaroon towers, or donoughts, or cheesecake or cookies but if you're really not into sweets then it's not essential.

Its a bit of a shame I suppose , you don't have to have a massive three tier one, could just have a smaller cake of a few different ones? I like the idea of truffle mountain.
