Contraception

cookiekat, 27 April, 2012 at 18:48 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 39

After reading Trickers bonking thread I got to wondering about how contraception effects you sex drive

What contraception do you use?

Does it effect you sex drive?

Does it effect your weight?

Ive been googling and apparently Depo Provera does effect your sex drive so, myabe I should switch but I dont know much about anything else?

Can't use condoms as they seem to burn me (sorry TMI)

I am too forgetful for the pill, what else is there?

I'm on the pill, microgynon (combined pill?)

Not really sure to be honest about weight and sex drive because I've been on it so long, and have matured since then and wasn't in a long term relationship before I started.

Have considered changing in the past but am reluctant to change before the wedding as I don't want to disrupt my hormones, after the wedding we'll be ttc (eventually) so I'll come off completely. I might come off before I'm ready to ttc and use condoms instead whilst my body gets back to 'normal'. I imagine once I've had kids I won't want to go back on the pill, I think I'll consider something like the implant or maybe even coil.

I was on the pill but have come off it. I had a bit of a scare a few months ago and thought I was preggers, so came off it so I would have a proper bleed( sorry if tmi). I've just not gone back on it as I thought I would be coming off it after honeymoon anyway. We're currently using condoms, so obviously they don't affect my weight. It doesn't affect my sex drive but it does mean we sometimes aren't as spontaneous I suppose!

I dont want to put on weight before the wedding and definitely not before the honeymoon so I might wait till the new year.

I've just been looking at implants and IUDs - I'm sure someone was saying the other day that they hurt so it's kind of putting me off a bit - I am a big wimp

I replied on you other thread but I was on the depo until Dcember. Caused me massive weight gain, depression and zero libido. I feel like a new woman now. We are using condoms for now. Do you plan to have children? The coil might be good for you. You are ready to ttc once it is taken out whereas everything else usually needs to get out of your system.

Just been reading about it on mumsnet. I always thought that less sex was due to getting older/busier/general life but Trickers post makes me think maybe it is the depo

We had a really active sex life 2-3 times a day then I went on depo and it's dwindled right down - been on depo for years now and I am definitely not as frisky as I was before I went on.

I'm on the ceraztte pill, I have been on it for two years now but before that i was on the depo provera and i bled everyday for three months.

I did mention if i could have the implant and she said i would have the same problem as they are both similar so thats why i went ion the cerazette. Since ive been on it ive not had a period for two years (which is a bonus really).

Its not affected my sex drive or weight but everyone is differant and you just need to find the right one to suit you.

Unfortunately due to suffering severe symptoms of a mini stroke whilst taking a range of pills, I am not able to take anything contraception wise, even the injection or implant. ☹️

So booo to condoms but yay to no weight gain (which I experienced on all pills that I tried)

    Don't fancy the coil!

Depo, Ceazette and the implant are all the same they are progesterone only so they are all the same.

oestrogen is the worst for affecting hormones and weight.

I used the implant until it was taken out on tuesday, I loved that, no periods, no problems. Painful having it put in for a few days bit of bruising on the arm but nothing major.

Nope still the same as it always was

Nope, unlike any oestrogen pill they made me gain lots of weight!

I've been taking Cerazette for 2 years now and it's fab (for me). I was on the depo for about 6 months and I turned into a psycho!! Mood swings were terrible, everyone was walking on eggshells around me. Never again!

I'm on Dianette and I do think its affected my sex drive a bit but then again I started taking it around the time H and I got to the 'comfortable' (ie. not like rabbits 24/7) stage of our relationship so it might just be a coincidence. I'm coming off the pill in June so I'm intersted to see how it affects me.

I have an implanon, have been using it for the last 4.5 years.

Honestly, I'm not sure if it's affected my sex drive. That has decreased in the last few years but I don't know if it's the implant, getting older, living together and therefore being less like "We have to seize the moment," starting work and being knackered most of the time, OH's illness (he's better now but when he was on treatment we hardly DTD at all for over 6 months) or something else.

I have put on weight since being on it, but again not sure if that's due to the implant itself, or that I've stopped exercising so much and can afford more/better food.

Roaccutane and the sun don't mix to well, you want to be a lot more careful on it over there. Dermalogica is expensive ish but it treats crappy skin really well, ask for some samples and try it out. Without seeing your skin I would guess at dermal clay cleanser (poss special cleansing gel if not so bad), gentle cream exfoliant, overnight clearing gel, active moist, skin hydrating booster and the oil free spf20 (cant remember it's name). I love Dermalogica for zitty skin it works wonders- my favourite clients used to be teenagers and young 20's who thought only meds would clear them up!

Sorry complete and utter deviation of topic there.?

You need to avoid scratchy/grainy scrubs as they will encourage sebum production and don't use soap as that dehydrates skin and again encourages sebum production, Hence the wash off face exfoliant. Unless it's specifically a daily micro foliant you should be exfoliating more than once Max twice a week.

Hormones are a big factor but the right products will help balance you skin and limit out breaks. keeping clean with products that are not stripping your skin is really important. I use special cleansing gel, the massive one costs £25 and lasts me about 5 months.

sorry will get off my soap box and back into my wellies. I used to specialise in facials and now I am a gardener but still LOVE skin

Dermalogica you can use in the shower, I do. Its the only product i have ever truly believed in - yes they will do the big sell therapists get paid on sales but you dont need it all and you build it up slowly, face wash, exfoliant and moisturiser is you need all the rest are added extras. You can get samples and try them before you buy.

Have a look at their web site they are very open and honest about what they have and why they make the products like they do.

I have the coil and i find that its the best thing that i've ever used. Having tried the pill and injection in the past.

It did hurt a little after i had it put in but that didn't last long and i have never had any problems at all with it. for as long as i've been on it it has not afected my sex drive.

I'm happy to answer any questions

I've just come off the pill and I am really noticing the effects, I have lost weight and my

    ❤️❤️ have shrunk- sad times.

I have been on Cilest whihc made me go up to a size 14 from my then normal size 8

Ovranette, is the same as Microgynon and that made me mental.

Most recently I have been on Dianette as I was having a few spotty teenager issues, it worked a treat.

My next move is looking at having a coil fitted- they sound a bit scary but I cant have any more hormones in me for now.

Nutella I would really advise you to see a GP about changing, obviously it is different for everyone but I have heard microgynon can be very bad for some women.

I was on this for years and years, since older teens right up to mid 20s. Nobody ever checked my BP, weight etc, just kept on giving me repeat prescriptions. I was the moodiest *** and couldn't figure myself out, I thought I was actually losing my mind a couple of years ago and was scared I was becoming a paranoid mentalist. I confided in a work friend and she had previously the same problem and had switched pills years ago to help her mood balance out. She had been prompted to do so because this particular pill had caused one of her mates to have a huge blood clot and she nearly lost her leg! Since I changed to Norimin pill my skin has improved, had a slight weight gain, lower sex drive and sometimes spotting but no more insane mood swings so I will take that!

I totally agree with PB here! I was on microgynon from 14 to early 20s and it's messed me up- I had the severe mood swings and it caused my bp to rocket. I came off it and couldn't believe the difference. I went on the injection for a bit and that was fab!

I would check about the microgynon pill though- I think it's the one they put you on straight away but it's really strong

Contraception is a looong story for me now! Used to be on the pill, dianette, which was fine. Then changed to yasmin, as dianette is what they seemed to think was quite a 'strong' pill to be on long term and I'd used it for about 3 years at that point, and yasmin would be better for this. Changed to yasmin and I became the most uninterested person in sex ever - and this stayed the same for nearly a year after hoping I might get back to normal once I'd get used to that change in pill - this never happened so I stopped taking it about 6months ago, giving up on this pill altogether.. This has proved it was the pill that knocked my libido as I'm back to normal since - However, since then I've been getting really bad side effects. My skin is really bad for started. Also apart from the period straight after the last pack of pills I took, the only periods I've had was November and January! I've been to the docs recently and am still awaiting to find out whats up. I also never gained weight whilst taking the pill, but as well as irregular/no periods since coming off, I've also gained a whole stone in the 6months - and no, I'm not pregnant! This weight gain can only be because of coming off the pill as I'm not eating unhealthily, and also keeping in mind that I steadily gained about 2 stone over about 4yrs this amount of weight gain is rediculous.. I'm eating the most healthiest, and smaller portions than I have done in years too!

Currently we just use condoms as there is no way I'm going back on the pill again and don't want to try anything else til all gets sorted. Hopefully this'll be soon. All I can say is thankfully we're not TTC!

I'm on microgynon and have been since I was fourteen, so a steady decade on it now. As a result, I can't really say whether it affects my sex drive or weight, as I've never known any different. I often wonder about it, as my moods can be quite changeable and extreme, sitting on the couch crying at something minuscule, or bursting with energy and doing three gym classes back to back! I'm scared to change though in case I don't like the alternative, and I wouldn't have hormones placed in my body that I couldn't just remove instantly, so would never get the injection.

I had the implanon implant for a year and a bit now. Since having the implant I have noticed the my sex drive took a nose dive - i had a very high one, but I'm unsure whether its the implant on its own, as living with OHs dad could have done the damage lol

I have actually lost nearly 2 stone since having it, through diet and exercise, but it certainly hasn't made me put any on, which is great!

Overall i love the implanon, easy, dont have to worry about it, no periods (although this is not the same for everyone) generally no hassle

Howdy - what condoms do you use if they burn you? If you are usign standrad latex ones try using Aventi condoms are they are latex free - see if that makes a difference for you.

But for me I'm using the implant, no periods, no remembering to take anythign fab!

But no sex drive. I've lost six stone whilst on it but that ahs been through hard work and determination once I'd had it fitted I foudn it ahrder to lose weight.

That is exactly what I was like in terms of moods and energy, but as soon as I changed I noticed the difference, I was worried about trying the unknown but it definitely worked out well. Might be worth a shot if you have a bit of breathing space after the wedding. Don't mean to sound bossy, but it was like a switch being flicked for me and I haven't looked back. Those sudden negative moods lifted and I haven't been like that since the new pill, I felt 'fixed' pretty quickly after changing.

Condoms only and no and no.

I was on microgynon and piled on the weight on that (which i've struggled ever since to lose) and then i was on cerazette which was great for stopping my period for two years but my sex drive was non existent. Since coming off the pill i've lost some weight and also got a sex life again. Although i'm considering cerazette for a short three month stint so that AF doesn't ruin the wedding or the honeymoon. I've yet to decide.

I have an IUD - I don't like the idea of hormonal contraception although I was on the pill in my late teens/early 20s. My first IUD fitting was a bit painful but I was fine the next day. Removal of IUD and fitting after having a baby is plain sailing. I've never had a problem with heavy periods since having the IUD, mine were far worse in my teens than now. I've recently started experiencing pain and bleeding mid-cycle but it's related to ovulation not the IUD.

I also agree! I've been on one pill or another since i was 13 (dodgy never-ending periods) .... i was on Cileste and then Dianette until i was about 20, came off after a random scare and as i wasn't in a relationship decided to stay off for a bit and just put up with dodgy periods.... wanted to go back on the pill when OH and i got back together and i was at a new GP's who put me on Microgynon, was on it for just over a year and had never had a check-up but asked for a blood pressure check after months of horrid headaches - 230/125 oopsie!!! Swiftly taken off it and headaches have improved slightly.

I'm considering coming off the pill altogether as i'm interested as to whether it affects my sex drive (i'm not entirely sure i've even got one it's so low!) and i know from the past that it takes me a good 2 years to sort myself out so after the wedding it would be a long time before we could TTC but i've got a feeling we wouldn't be that strict with the whole using condoms things as we're both quite broody but not sure a babba would be a good idea right now!
