Contraceptive implants- anyone?

Knownowt, 9 November, 2008 at 15:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Does anyone have one of these? What do you think? Do you still have periods?

I'm on Microgynon which suits me very well- no mood swings, weight gain etc. Does anyone know whether this means I'm likely to have a similar lack of side effects with something more permanent? Part of me thinks if it ain't broke, don't fix it- taking a pill each day is hardly a chore. Still, never having to give any thought to contraception would be nice...

It's a different contraceptive to the combined pill as there's no oestrogen. You periods may stop or become lighter or irregular. Minority have troublesome bleeding. Because it's progesterone only you might gain weight, get acne or have a lowered libido. Very effective, more so than the combined pill.

I was on the pill for years no side effects as such, went on the implant and i had an awful time, in the 18 months i had it in i was bleeding for probably 90% of that ranging from light spotting to proper period, i never knew when i was going to start and how long it would go for. i was evil hormonal (which for somebody who has a low temper threshold anyway was not good) and could happily have killed. i hated it.

but a friend has just had her 2nd put in and has had a great time with it, no periods, no hormonal strops etc.

For me the implant seems side effect free. i get regular periods (i didn't before) and my libido is fine (disappeared on the injection). weight gain has been nil but i was quite lardy when i went on it ? i'm on my second one and would happily go for a third if husband wasn't having a vasectomy.

I had two. I had no periods whatsoever which I found wonderful! However, I had horrendous acne. Huge lumps under the skin on my back, neck and jawline. I ended up taking antibiotics everyday until I had the second one removed. If it wasn't for that I'd have it again in an instant.

I had the Implanon implant last year and have not had any side effects, other than very light periods!

Because of the possible side effects they gave me pills to take for the first 3 months which contain the same hormones as the implant - so I could decide whether I would be able to put up with the side effects or not. Obviously, stopping taking pills is much easier than removing an implant!

I have one, I had one a few years ago too, but had it removed when I started to consider starting a family.

I had lots of bad symptoms when I first had this one fitted, but the calmed down, I now don't have periods, I do have a lot of period pains, but I also have PCOS which could be causing these.

I have put on lots of weight, but this may well be because of other drugs and changes in my life.

    xx

I'm on my third implant. The first one left me with no periods to speak of (yay), whilst the 2nd and 3rd has meant I'm back to normal. It did sort out my period pains, though, and the best thing about it is that it's so long-lasting. I love mine. I can't be very helpful re: experiences on the pill, since I've never taken it.

A friend had to have the implant taken out due to acne, weight gain, etc issues - but I would never be without mine now, I love it!

I had it about 5 years ago and I had nearly constant bleeding, but this time around (put in Nov 07) I have been period free.
