Cookery book recs

Fatgirl, 12 August, 2008 at 19:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

H is a chef so gets really annoyed at having to come home and cook again. So I have decided I better start cooking.

Can anyone recommend a cook book, with nice recipes. Nothing to extravagant or complicated. I really hate cooking, but thought I better make an effort. We don't want to live on convenience food.

Thanks

    Hello

I come back to the Leiths Vegetarian Bible again and again. There is also a fish one, regular one etc etc although the veggie one is lovely anyway - even if you're not. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leiths-Vegetarian-Bible-Polly-Tyrer/dp/0747557160/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218566548&sr=8-3

Also anything by Nigel Slater is lovely and down to earth. Could quite happily read them for pleasure, as well as an instructional cookery book!

I have some really simple dead tasty recipes I can email you if you like. They're ones that I make in bulk and freeze so I can just whip them out of the freezer like a ready meal. If you want me to send them PM me.

I also recommend buying a couple of cookery magazines over a book as they have more variety and are cheaper.

I have Gordon Ramsey's Sunday Lunch and although I haven't cooked much out of it, the recipes I have followed have been quite easy.

I also have Nigella Express but that might be too easy iyswim.

Oh and what Bowski said about cookery magazines, I also pick up recipe cards from waitrose and Sainsburys which are fab and free ?

Nigel Slater is a cookery god, as far as I'm concerned. I love his prose every bit as much as I love his recipes.

'Those irritating harridans on television who persist in telling us how to dress, think and of course eat would no doubt rather die than tuck into a slice of this golden sugary pie. Which is why they are no fun. Leave them to their mung beans. That way there will be more treacle tart left for us.'

    ?

Delia is good too but not half as much fun to read.

I get most of mine from www.goodfood.co.uk - you can set up a page, put your favourites in, create menus etc.

If you have something that needs to be used up, you can stick it in the recipe search and find something to make. I have loads of books that I do use, but for easy evening cooking I think this is fab.
