corkage charges!!!

littleprincess30, 17 May, 2012 at 11:30 Posted on Planning 0 8

This has probably been done to death but really need some haggling advice!

we are buying all our wines and prosseco from our venue (they have a onsite wine shop which is owned by the hotel)

they sell bottles of prosseco for £14 inc VAT in their wine shop but are charging us £27 a bottle for the toast! i nearly fell over when i saw the price difference! now I understand they open it, they put it in glasses, they serve it and clear the glasses away but can they warrant such a high charge??

we are not buying any drinks from outside the venue we are using their wines and toast drinks from their shop, so do i have any room to haggle on this?

    ?

There's always room to haggle. If you don't ask, you'll never know. I'd definitely be trying to bat that price down!

Thats expensive, haggle hard lol and bare in mind not everyone will even like the toasting champers so you can request for the glasses to not be filled right up, at weddings ive been to we were served just over half a champagne glass to toast presumably for this reason and it was rancid! bleh

Our venue wanted to charge 17.00 per bottle corkage so it made sense to use theirs.

During our venue search, we were never quoted a 'corkage' price if we purchased the wine/champagne from them! I find it a bit outrageous that your venue is doing this, and it just reminds me that as soon as you say 'wedding' people just see you as a cash machine. Even if the venue has to pour into glasses, etc., and assuming even 10 glasses per bottle, are they really saying that it costs them over £1 per glass to do this? For less than that you could buy your own glasses, use them as favors, sit the bottles on the table, and have your guests pour the champagne themselves!

Anyways, sorry, just my rant because I'm mad for you! And yes, I think you can haggle -- at least the worst answer will be 'no'.

thanks MAG2FMC i just wanted to make sure i was not over reacting before asking them about it, i always thought corkage was charged if you brought your own drink onto the premises, but clearly these guys are making money by charging for their OWN bottles to be opened!! i will get onto them and find out exactly what this charge is for!

I think £27 is pretty good... you can't buy prosseco in most bars or restaurants for that price (well not in London anyway) Usually look at more £30-£45. No harm in haggling for your wedding.

Yeah surely they shouldn't charge you to open the bottles you have bought from them! seems a bit odd! I reckon definitely some haggling value in this! ?
