Cost cutting cake ideas?

AngeliB, 10 November, 2008 at 21:01 Posted on Planning 0 11

Im having a small wedding, so I decided rather than having a 1 tier cake I would have some pretty cup cakes.

Im trying to find the cheapest way of doing this. Everywhere I have looked the charges are between £3 and £6 each for some simple cupcakes (not even mini cakes)!!

Do I just say what the heck and pay it ie stress free!?

Do I attemp making some myself but with lots of practise goes and possible failure!?

Do I ask my mum to do it and have burnt buns?

Does anyone have any ideas? I did buy some from ASDA the other day 2 packs for £2 haha but they wern't that nice and I wouldn't like to risk it buying them the day before.

Its seems you can buy a cup cake from a bakers for 80p but if you mention the word wedding they suddenly cost a fiver each!! whats all that about!

In 1 of the recent mags i bought; one of the couples couldnt be bothered with a cake so they got boxes of kipling cakes, large variety of them and placed them on a tier stand. Every cake was gone by the end of the night... least the guests know what they like..i fancy the idea myself...

Ive got that magazine too!! I thought my guests might think im cheap if I did that, my family are snobby! haha

I might email requesting a quote for "birthday" cup cakes, wonder if it will make a difference!!

I wonder if I could do something instead of cakes hmm

One of the brides on here did the same. Think it was Joflake, I'm sure she said it cost her about £40 to buy them from the supermarket

I got my cake from M and S, £40 and it fed 32 people- got the 'novelty' cake instead of wedding cakes which were going to cost £180 upwards!

Have you thought about getting a cake from Costco's? I remembered yesterday that they do the most scrummy cakes at only £10 and they are big. They will decorate them to what you want.

I'm thinking of getting one for our reception just for extra.
