Cottage in the Lakes / Yorkshire Dales

Hello All,

We are looking at booking a cottage in early November for a few days / week away in the Lakes or the Dales.

As I have never been there, I just haven't got a clue of what town / area is good to be near.

Given the time of year, we can't guarantee the weather, so don't want to be completely remote. But would like to be somewhere we can easily get out walking from if the weather is suitable, and somewhere that at least has a little shop / pub in a reasonable distance.

Any suggestions appreciated

Ahh yes Troutbeck Bridge is lovely too.

I find Ambleside to be a bit less commercial than Bowness and Windermere, but still with loads of amenities.

As Sange said, nowhere is far from a walk.

If you go for the Dales, Settle is a lovely area with absolutely loads of places to see not far away, such as Malham Tarn, a whole slew of cave systems which are open to the public, it's not far to Masham, where there's a brewery tour, and there's the Settle to Carlisle railway. The scenery is lovely and the towns all have lovely teashops.

Oh goodness I love Masham - how could I have forgotten about there? Maybe not enough to do for a week but it's our favourite place for a long weekend. We stay at the Kings Head pub normally.
