Could you run a cat over without noticing?

Pittabre, 12 November, 2012 at 09:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Strange post bear with me:

Next door neighbour asked me had I heard about how the local children that go to the comp had all been trauamtised? Nope said I. She said they were all waiting for their bus when a car 'flew' round the corner just as a cat was stepping out onto the road. The car hit the cat, it was thrown into the air and then he ran over it (not sure how that works but anyway). She said the driver carried on without even slowing down. The neighboru then described in great detail the cats injuries and its death rattle in front of the children. She said she couldn't believe the way the driver just carried on.

I assumed she was telling me because I go and collect any cats that get hit by cars and sort them out as necessary, but she said people knew what was happening with em at the moment so someone else had helped the cat.

But what shocked her the most was the guy carried on driving. I have previously hit a rabbit when drivign on the motorway and def knew it had happened but not sure if it was because I saw it happening IYSWIM? (Still feel guilty about it, but it ran out and in heavy traffic I couldn't swerve☹️)

So is it possible he didn't realise or did he jsut not care?

I assume he could have been distracted by changing the tuner on his radio or something, and not realised - and he wouldn't have heard a thump if his radio was loud.

It sounds very dramatic for him to have hit the cat, the cat flown into the air and then he drove over it, especially if he was driving fast - is that even possible?

I don't think it's illegal to not stop when you hit a cat (someone may correct me if I'm wrong) not that I'm saying its ok not to.

I don't think so? I've hit rabbits before and they make a right old thump so I imagine that a cat would make a noise? That said I tend to keep my eyes out for moggies anyway because I am a mad cat lady.

I wondered if she had over dramatised it but ? have been trying to work out the physics of it and eventually came to a scenraio where it could happen but the cat wouldn't have gone in the air and it would have involved the cat jumping off the kerb quite fast?

It isn't illegal, but it was more he apparently didn't appear to notice.

Yes funky, I don't think you are legally obliged to stop if you hit a cat, but you are if you hit a dog.

Still it's sad that a cat has been killed. P - I'm curious: how do you mean you collect cats that have been run over and sort them out?

Sorry that must sound mental out of context. We live near a busy road and if cats get run over, we either take them to a vet or if they are dead I clean them up and make them look a lot less distressing to the owner and return them.

This actually ahppened on a quiet street☹️

You run up and over cats, not through them. Even rats make your car bump up significantly. I have hit cats at 20 mph and at 50 mph and I knew both times. Unmistakeable that you have hit something, although plausibly unaware of what it was unless you saw it run out.

So he was purely an *** not to show down or react in anyway.

My H hit a cat a few weeks ago, it just appeared out of nowhere and he couldn't stop in time. He said it was a big thump and it damaged some of the vents, so definitely couldn't not notice. It ran off though so hopefully he didn't kill it.

Both times I hit cats, I stopped and went back to see if I could find anything. There was nothing there either time (and nothing under the car either). However, and I'm just throwing this out for discussion, I can see why someone wouldn't stop. It's fear of the unknown and fear of what you might have to do.

If I hit a cat and it was squashed dead, no problem. Get the collar and inform the owners. If I hit a cat and it appeared to have only a broken leg, no problem. Get the collar, inform the owners and take it to a vet.

It's the middle ground that's problematic. What if you find the cat half-dead with no chance of living, yowling in pain? You have to make the most dreadful decision then, and it's one I think most people would find very very difficult to do. Hence easier to avoid the issue and pretend everything is OK.

Also agree there is no way he couldn't have realised but also agree with the above.

It was more that he didn't react and didn't slow down according to the neighbour rather than that he didn't do anything.
