Council tax question

Melancholie, 5 August, 2009 at 19:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Wondering if someone can clarify something for me before I ring the council tomorrow. Background: we moved out of our rented flat (and out of the borough) on July 27th. I called the council tax office on July 24th to inform them of the move. They asked the end date of our tenancy, I told them July 27th, they said that the direct debit payments we'd made so far came to more than what we owed for the period we'd been in the flat and told me not to cancel the direct debit as they would need that active to process a refund back into our bank account.

Fast forward to today. I've just logged into our online banking and the council took another direct debit payment yesterday. I need to ring them tomorrow to complain about them taking the payment and to chase up the refund we're owed. I want to be in possession of all the facts when I call so I want to work out how much they actually owe us. So here's the question: when you move out of a property, do the council charge you council tax for the day you move out or not?

?

I would assume they would charge you for that day and at least if you calculate based on that, it would be the worst case scenario. Get it in writing to your e-mail and new address.

I would say you'd have to pay for any day you are in the property, therefore that would include the day you move out.

What a pain, hope you manage to sort it without too much fuss.

Thanks ladies, you've confirmed what I thought. Mum seemed to think we wouldn't have to pay for that day. Not a huge difference (£1.87 for the day) but I just wanted to have the figures right before I call them.

No, you're not liable for the day you move out of a property, only the day you move in. If you were liable for both, you'd have an overlap in liability when a house is sold between the old owners and the new.

You're also not liable for the day you die, so that's one to look forward to.

Pom, I've been searching for ages and can't find anything about this anywhere. Do you by any chance have a link to info that confirms that? ?
