crafty people and invitation DIYers

Jemima Renrut, 28 December, 2012 at 16:20 Posted on Planning 0 18

I really want to make our invitations, and have worked out I need to make at least 60 in total. Trouble is I've realised I have no idea where to start! Really trying to stick with the plan of starting making things in january as want them all done by June and I really want to enjoy it and not feel rushed. I started looking at pocketfolds on pda and eBay, but they're still quite pricy. So what other "types" of invitation are available? We need to put inserts in them, reply card, map, hotel info so I have seen a couple where these are tied in with string. Whixh would work with our rustic farmy theme. Ok I'm waffling, I guess I don't have a specific question, would just like as much advice as poss about types of invite, websites and shops to buy things from, your experiences of making them, tips and advice, and of course flashes. Help me start please. Thanks!

We haven't even set a date yet but will be making ours as me and my mum both enjoy crafts, the card inserts you can print yourself and stick in to the seam of the card, we aren't providing reply cards as guests can buy them (card factorys start at 29p) and I don't want uniform ones back and the map/other information you can try in with string which looks nice, have a look on craft creations website they sell loads of different types of cards/envelopes/embelishments etc. Good look witht he planning!

A bunch of cards tied with string or ribbon would be a really easy and cost effective way to do it.

I would just purchase some nice card (maybe linen effect, that always looks lovely) in A4.

I'd then probably make the invitations A6 sized so I could fit four cards to each A4 piece (Keep in mind the printing edges of domestic printers). I'd print and trim at home with a guillotine.

Then find some really nice vintage or similar ribbon to tie then together with (or rustic brown string).

Personally I'd keep the card cream and the type black with any colour injected through the ribbon.

Kharv I have an image of this in my head now and making them sounds quite simple thanks. Think I'm going to scrap pocketfold altogether. Thanks for everyone's help keep the ideas flowing for me so I'm not so baffled!

    Hiya

What you are thinking of is a great solution for you. I have just done one similar for a bride using Rafia and it looked amazing ?

    Hi Jemima,

I've been making mine over the holidays. I've really enjoyed it but I like crafty things. Mine are simple cards with vintage paper, lace and East of India stamps. Here's a quick flash of the prototype I will flash more once I'm done.

My advice would be to go to a good craft shop with your colour scheme and see what they can find for you. There are so many different craft papers around and I see it as a perfect opportunity to try something unique.

Also- get everybody involved- my Grandma loved helping out!

    Hope it helps

I've been trying to think of the name of that stamp! Thanks. That looks really good. I have a crafty friend who I'm seeing tonight so going to have a chat with her too, and it just so happens she has about 6 months of maternity leave left and has already offered her help. Think she's going to regret it.lol. can you tell me more about the stamp? Do they do each letter individually? Are they just one font? where did you get it from? I had never heard of them until I came on hitched. Thanks.

I'm waiting my supplies to arrive at the moment. I've ordered

250 sheets of lavender 160 gsm card

    40m ivory ribbon

    25 sheets ivory linen card

a punch that cuts one 45mm heart with about 15 small hearts cut out of it

250 sheets ivory 105 gsm paper

Spent about 45 quid in the end but I'm hoping to get 100 invitations and 100 order of service out of this. There are a couple of designs I'm thinking of so I'll make a couple of prototypes and let him chose his favourite. I still need to buy envelopes too.

Went to a wedding last night and all the bouquets and button holes were paper flowers. I'd been thinking of doing paper flowers for the table centres but now I'm thinking of using them for everything.

I got all of my pocketfold stuff from pda, found them very reasonable and very helpful, my advice would be avoid hobbycraft - too expensive!!

Simple things like a round edge cutter can make them look more professional too...

Fonts can make a huge difference too... you can download some for free from sites like dafont.com
