Create your own Golden (half) hour

barongreenback, 14 February, 2009 at 19:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 49

Inspired by the Hole, here's your chance to create your own Golden (half) hour. Choose your favourite year within your own lifetime (stops me choosing 6 Who tracks ?) and give us 6 songs that best represent that year.

Your challenge awaits...

I'm going with 1992 (for no other reason than I like the songs).

    My 6 are:

    Blind Melon - No Rain

    Nirvana - Lithium

Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven

REM - Man on the Moon

    U2 - One

This is not easy - there were about 10 other tracks I could have chosen after I googled ?

This was the year I first started going out to pubs / clubs etc so I can agree with a few of your choices there for pure nostalgia ?

(I was far too young to be out though it has to be said)

That's the year I finished school.

I'm choosing 1993. My first year at uni, I discovered going out, started drinking far too much and snogging far too many people. A good year.

The Ship Song - Nick Cave

    Go - Pearl Jam

    *** - Dennis Leary

    Linger - Cranberries

    My Sister - Juliana Hatfield

Happy Birthday Helen - Things of Stone and Wood

So hard, there are at least 50 songs I could choose from that year, and I've changed a few of these already.

My list could have been much worse Stock Aitken Waterman galore -

Kylie and Jason but I wasn't a big fan. And the classic SAW - I'd rather jack-Reynold Girls

Just looking through the list from that year, how could I miss

Baby I don't care - Transvision Vamp. I love this song.

I'm going to cheat, sorry. Probably none of these songs were actually released in 1991, nd there are only 4, but they remind me of that golden year (the year I was 18):

Love Cats - the Cure (1983)

    The Love Shack - B52s (1989)

The Timewarp (I went to se the Rocky Horror Show in London with the school Arts Society and the very hot head boy of the boy's school came dressed in suspenders ?)

Ticket to Ride - the Beatles - reminds me of sitting late on summer night with my best friend, the boy I really fancied and his best mate while the boys played the Beatles on their guitars.

    I loved being 18.

you're the voice - john farnham

something inside so strong - labi siffre

so cold the night - communards

    the circus - erasure

i could probably add another 5 songs too ?

Not necessarily my favourite year of all time as that would imply that it's all been downhill since then but 1977 was a fun year for me, musically and otherwise. The Queen's Silver Jubilee saw street parties and parades all over the place (and me in my very fetching red, white and blue jumpsuit ?); it was the year Star Wars burst onto the silver screen, not to mention Saturday Night Fever (although I was too young to see it then, I could appreciate the soundtrack). The year was marred for me by the death of my pin-ups Marc Bolan and Elvis Presley but I was distracted by punk bursting onto the scene in all its safety-pinned, tartan bum-flapped glory. There was still the tail end of glam rock to enjoy, disco was popular and punk was new and dangerous. Such variety back then.

Sound and vision - David Bowie

    White Riot - The Clash

You sexy thing - Hot Chocolate

We will rock you/We are the champions - Queen

    Way Down - Elvis Presley

Stayin' Alive - The Bee Gees

1977 was a fab year for me, too- I was born!

Jaffacake's hour is pretty much perfect for me- particularly her last 3, which sum up my teenage Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights out. (About a fiver all night, walked home leathered and stayed up for hours after singing Baby D and N-Trance. Perfection.)

I will do my own tomorrow i think, as the bodka and red bull is clouding my mind at the moment! Smiley laugh
