Credit crunch/economising - what won't you cut back on?

I've tried cheaper brands/own brand stuff but I just love the smell that the more expensive ones leave on my laundry. I've actually started using the liquitabs and I think they're even more expensive than the powder tablets I used to use.

Another thing is mince. I bought cheaper mince (not smartprice but regular beef mince, I always usually buy steak mince) and the lasagne I made with it was very greasy.

What won't you compromise on in tough economic times?

I'm with ONE and HH- there is nothing I wouldn't economise on if need be.

The things that i felt had no subsitute I would not buy at all, but I'm generally flexible.

I am extremely brand loyal to coke. I am not sure I care that much about other brands. Aren't battery farmed layers going to be banned anyway, so all eggs will be free range?

I think I feel more strongly about eggs than meat, I would probably buy sad meat

I'll cut back on everything and anything I possibly can, if it means keeping my head above water.

Luckily we're not at that place right now, but if the time comes, then I'll ditch all brand names and use whatever makes financial sense. To do otherwise, seems complete madness to me.

Like Hole said, if I had to i'd economise more but at the moment i'm sticking to:

Bold washing powder, although I buy it when on offer

    Pampers nappies

    Free range eggs

    PG Tips

    Heinz baked beans

    Kellogs cornflakes/rice krispies

I've used 'value' or 'economy' toilet rolls but I think it can be a false economy, you get through so much more and there doesn't seem to be much on the roll so I buy whatever is on offer, whether it's own brand or Andrex etc.

Persil/Fairy washing up liquid - I haven't found an alternative cheapy that you don't have to use lots of to get decent bubbles.

if we couldn't afford happy meat/ eggs then we would just do without, or stretch the cheap cuts (trotters anyone?) even further. on that note i'd be interested to hear what HFW does with them tonight.

    lots of lentils instead.

H loves his Heinz beans, and doesn't like to economise. And I love my Heinz spaghetti in tomato sauce.

I like to use Bird's Eye for fish fingers and waffles, Fairy washing powder, Ecover washing up liquid.

We get Smartprice biscuits, tinned tomatoes and onions. And we have a digibox, so no Sky.

We get most of our meat from a local butchers, and I'd rather go vegetarian if we couldn't afford it. And we've done that in the past once or twice.

If we were cutting down, H would probably stop drinking so much (not that he drinks a lot!), and we'd cut back on meat and fish dishes. I'd probably go back to making my own bread.

Once whilst I was pregnant we had 8GBP for a whole week's food and we managed on store cupboard essentials and all we bought at the supermarket were onions, lentils, tinned tomatoes, potatoes, milk, porridge oats, bread flour, pasta and sultanas. I think it was the healthiest we've ever eaten!

I've saved hundreds of pounds I reckon by not having periods for 18 months ? AND the Pill is free from the family planning clinic!
