Background:
At 21 I left uni and got a job at a big theatre not far from where Id been to uni. OH was already working there and had moved to the area for the job. Lots of the staff were like that, without families nearby and so I we made our own family. Very cheesy but I think of them as my other family. Anyway, it took 3 years for us to get together and we have been together for 8 years since. We’ve had 2 daughters in that time, one very very premature which really tested us but we stood strong. OH never wanted marriage mainly due to his families ideals about it and his wanting to rebel I suppose. Then he lost his Dad. And it changed his thinking. We chatted about it and decided it might be an idea. I asked him on valentines day this year and we decided to go for it. Our theatre offered us the use of their building (gratis!) and so we were able to do it quick! So it was booked as was the reg office for Fri 17th August (Saturdays are not an easy day in the theatre world!).
Week before wedding: So the Friday before I got my fair coloured in the morning then popped off to work for a short afternoon shift. Came into a decorated locker, flowers and cake from my collegues, bless them. Then off to get my nails done. Now it wouldn’t be my choice to do it a week before the wedding but a lady at work had done it as a treat for me. Wasn;t feeling too hot to be honest, achy sinuses etc, put it down to a busy day.
Saturday and Sunday: OMG, was horrendously ill all weekend. Being sick, fainting when stood up, couldn’t keep anything down. I just couldn’t believe it!!! I have a 4 year old and a 3 year old to care for to and OH was working all weekend.
Monday: My daughters were booked into their childminders full time for the week so I could do all the wedding bits. So dropped them off and then home but couldn’t do any work as too ill! Tescos dropped my shopping in the morning and I just dumped the fridge and freezer stuff in, still in the bags and the rest I left in the middle of the floor, I just couldn’t put it away, felt horrid! I really felt I would be cancelling!
Tuesday: Mum was arriving today, after a 200mile drive from where she lives to help me get ready for Friday. I went to the doc in desperation in the morning where she basically told me to go home there was nowt she could do! Argh! Anyway, Mum arrived at lunchtime and we had a good catch up. I actually felt a bit better, maybe it was relief that reinforcements had arrived! 2pm we went to collect my dress. I’d only had one fitting and so was hoping it would be fine! Mum had never seen me in my dress so it was quite exciting! The bodice had been taken in and fitted lovely! Unfortuately when my seamstress went to show Mum how the bustle went, she had stitched it in the wrong place! Panic! Anyway, it was only a hook and eye so me and Mum went for a walk in the town for half hour whilst it was fixed! All perfect and off we went home!
Wednesday: Craft day! As had been so ill I hadn’t been able to do much so we hit at it the work hard! I had straw flags to make and a welcome sign to finish, my lovely Mum had done my guest book and card box for me at home. So we cracked on with that all day. My friend popped over at 2 to wax my eyebrows then at 4 I had booked Mum in to have shellac on her nails and to repair one of mine! All good fun and it was nice to do some pampering with my Mum as we don’t get a lot of time together. In the evening, I went up to our workplace, a huge theatre where my OH was starting to decorate the foyer. Lots of ladders and a niftylift crane thing ensued, but we got loads done.
Thursday: We loaded the car up and joined OH at work to start the huge renovation of the function room from empty blank canvas to wedding reception venue. Our theatre does not rent out for weddings. Ever. So this was very new and the only reason we could have it is that we have both worked there for 11 and 13 years so its like our home. Anyway, I set mum up with an ironing board to de crease all the window drapes which we had pre cut ready to decorate with. Some of OH’s fellow technicians came round to help with a,lot of the higher level stuff but it all started to look great! Then could start to do lots of prettying! Id already premade organza bows in our colours of purple and turquoise to decorate the drapes and tables. Mum left just before 6 to collect the girls whilst I carried on setting up and chatted with our Dep Gen Manager who would be overseeing our reception the next day about what things needed getting out the next day, centrepieces etc. OH went off the his best mans for the night whilst I finished up. It got to just gone 8 and I decided to leave it, the few tiny bits I hadn’t quite finished, I didnt care about by now, was just too tired! I got a lift home where Mum upsettingly told me she had scratched our car! Bloody hell ot was tiny and she was in floods of tears about it. Told her it didn’t matter but hey. Suddenly realised Id not given OH his gift! Argh! Told Mum I was gonna pop up to the BM house to drop it off. Went out to the car and as I got in the next door neighbour came out shouting. I got out the car where she told me she’d set her kitchen on fire! Went in and there are flames leaping out of the oven! I don’t mess with fire, I just called the fire brigade! 2 pumps arrived and I was finally able to leave the lady and he daughter as husband had come home. Nearly ten at night I finally made it to OH. Gave his gift and actually got to say a proper good bye which was nice. Came home and chatted to Mum for a bit but was tired so went and got into bed which was sharing with Mum lol and I passed straight out!
The BIG day!
Woke up after great night sleep at half 6. Mum hadn’t slept at all! Sat in bed and opened my gift from OH. He’d bought me a kindle (Id been banging on about one for ages LOL!) and a locked with a picture of him and the girls in. Was getting girls ready for their childminders when we realised we hadn’t finished my flowers which were silk and foam and had to have sparkles put in them. We then realised the stuff to do it was at the theatre along with Mums confetti! So I threw some clothes on and drove up to the theatre to grab the bits! Cue some very surprised staff making their way in with suitcases with all their clothes in for the evening LOL! Anyway, with a fresh head, the few little bits that I hadn’t quite finished the night before I got done! Back home for a cuppa and some brekkie! Mum sat finishing my bouquet and a van pulled up outside, OH had sent me flowers and had thoughtfully had them sent in a vase so I wouldn’t have to faff vasing them myself! Bless him! Mum was busy with my flowers so I nipped to the hotel round the corner to give my Nana and Grandad their buttonholes and see my brother as he was our photographer for the day! All done and back home again!Anyway, my hairdresser and make up lady arrived at 11. My hairdresser is one of my oldest friends, we met at the theatre and she was the first person I spoke to there. Anyway, she bought over a bottle of fizz with her and gave my a gift of a lovely book of pictures of my hen do she and a few other hens had made. All getting a bit emotional! Anyway off we go on my hair and make up. It was so relaxed because she is a close friend, I cant imagine anything nicer. Anyway she does my hair then takes it all out again as she wasn;t happy lol! Me done, make up artist goes and hairdresser starts on Mum. Brother has arrived and is doing some pics of me and shoes and dress etc. Mum done, bro goes. Girls get dropped home at 1.30. Action stations. Hairdresser curls their hair and pins it and then we get them into their dresses. I look at the window so see a rain storm start. Was a bit sad but tried to let it go.Hairdresser goes. My lovely friend from uni and her husband (I was her BM last year) arrive to take the girls for us which I was worried about as my youngest can be a bit clingy but off they went happy. Then it was just me and Mum. She went off the get dressed whilst I made sure we had everything ready. I already had my veil on too so then went upstairs to pop my underwear on. Then realised I couldn’t get my dress gown on coz I was worried about knocking veil out! So Mum had to close the curtains so I could get my dress on. All on, I felt so nervous! It was by then 3 oclock and time to leave. Came out the door to a very bemused postman. LOL!
Into the back was harden than I realised as my hoop made my dress a bit big but in I went and we were off. I asked Mum to pop radio on to take my mind off my nerves. As we drove towards the reg office I could see lots of aour friends still stood outside. Yelled to Mum to keep going and we went round the corcer. My brother called to say the previous wedding had overrun and to stay put. T half past 3 we had the call to say we were safe and got there where we were rushed in to have the meeting super quick. My granddad came in with me. With all that done, me, granddad and my girls all waited outside the room and I heard the sound of She by Elvis Costello start up. My girls went first and held hands like angels. Then I walked in with Grandad. OH was there in tears as was a few members of our small party.
Ceremony went fine and then lots of pictures in the room. Mum did a reading about giving your daughter away which me and her both choked on, as did some of our friends. We then went outside in glorious warm sunshine for piccies!
Mum drove me and my husband back to the theatre and then sh went to meet the rest of the family for a meal in a pub. We went into the theatre, our home really, where there were flags waving and a hige congratulations poster they had made. They had made us T shirts too, our surname is Wright to mine said Mrs Always Wright and OH’s said Mr Never Wright! Very funny! Our manager popped the champagne then we settled down to relax. It was lovely to just be able to chat about what had gone on and have a breather! We got Nandos brought in for us! LOL! And then my brother was back for some auditorium shots, again, something no one else will get to do so that was fun!
Then our guests started to arrive! Lots of hugs and kisses, lots of friends we hadn’t seen for a long time! We cut the cake and then our best man did a very fun speech and we thanked all our guests for coming. We did our first dance to Annalise Emerick’s Stand by Me. Then it was party time! Lots of cheesy music, I did Tragedy by Steps with my box office girls, great fun!
1am it all finished and we stayed chatting to our lovely friends right til the end! Apart from that little rain storm it had been an amazing day, beautiful sunshine, fabulous friends, a relaxed celebration which is what we wanted! We then went off in a taxi to our hotel where we sat up chatting about the day we’d had!!!
