CT Scan & Dye-Test help needed & brain op through the groin....(poss sens)

clairegwen, 26 May, 2009 at 16:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

My head is just a complete muddle. I don't want to google on any on the above, but would appreciate any positive info that people might have.

First of all my aunty collapsed last tuesday with a blood clot on the brain (can't remember the name). She is having surgery today (its been touch and go for the past week). The family were given a choice of op (either through the skull or through the groin). After a long discussion with the consultant they are going for the groin. Should know more at 5pm today, as to how it went. Do you know anybody that has had this done, and any helpful info?

I have had an ear infection for 3 months. I was back at the hospital today and I have to go for tests, a CT Scan and some sort of dye that will be able to tell if the infection has gone into my bones. Apparently if it has I will have to go into hospital to be put on an intravenous antibiotic. I am s***ing myself!!! Anybody had either of these tests and what can I expect. I am a wuss when it comes to hospitals and needles. I've spent the morning crying (think its a combination of everything really!). I'm worried that I will feel claustophobic when they do the scan.

Any helpful advice (or kicks up the backside to pull myself together) please?!

TIA

I've had a CT scan with the dye.

Its not uncomfortable, just takes a good while (about 45 mins). I felt the dye as a warmness going around my body. Not unpleasant, just tingly.

I was told to bring some music to help me relax as the noise from the machine is loud. The person doing the scan gave me instructions through my headphones.

Sorry to hear your aunty is poorly ?

Thank you for that. Trouble is, I am deaf and wear hearing aids (well I've only worn one for the last 3 months). I doubt I will be able to hear anything unless I can wear my aid.

    Hi

I can tell you about my experience if it helps. Nearly 12 months ago I had a subarachnoid haemorrhage in my brain. I was in a coma and had to have surgery. My doctors didn't give my family a choice and they decided to operate through my groin. They performed a procedure called Coiled Embollisation of 2 arteries that ruptured. By having teh surgery performed through my groin I recovered a hell of a lot quicker than my skull being opened up. The mark in my groin was so small it didn't even need stiches. I came out of my coma within 24 hours of the surgery and was home within 7 days. This is the benefit of the groin surgery. Recovery is quicker and better as it is less invasive. I have to have an MRI every year or so for ever to keep an eye on the coils.

As for the CT scan. I have had several of these prior to my surgery. They are no where near as claustrophobic as MRI. For starters the 'polo' isn't as close to your face and the noise is more like the swishing noise from doctor who rather than the banging and knocking noise of the MRI. You lay on the table and the table moves you into the scanner. You only go in as far as your neck whereas the MRI you go right into it. Also your head isn't in a cage or anything - you just have to lie still. You can see the laser lights but the noise is ok. As for the dye, once you are in the CT scanner, they inject you with this liquid and it just feels warm. There is no pain from it or stinging and it doesn't last very long.

I hope this has put your mind at rest. The CT scanner is not a long process like the MRI so don't worry honest. It is over before you know it.

Feel free to post again with any questions.

    Kxxxxxx
