Cuba- Has anyone been?

*Funky*, 19 February, 2015 at 21:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I'm going to Cuba at the end of May ? (Havana and Varadero)

Any recommendations on things to do/see/eat?

We want to do a vintage car tour so particularly interested in car tour operator recommendations.

How exciting! Very jealous of your holiday.

We went to Cuba about 8 years ago. Not much help on vintage car tours but there are certainly a lot of usual vintage cars there so someone must do them! A city tour of Havana to see all the architecture and Ernest Hemmingway hotel is a must. Also, you are obliged to drink mojhotos. I would recommend the Tropicana dance show in Havana for one evening. I really enjoyed it but it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

We stayed in one of the tourist resorts on the north of the island too as well as Havana. If you are interested, the scuba diving and snorkeling can be fantastic. Lots to see in the water.

I can't really help but my OH went years ago and loved it. He stayed in Varadero and just had a day trip to Havana I think. He really wants to go back and stay for about 3 days in Havana next time.

    Me! I went last year.

Did 4 days in havana and then 10 days in guardalavaca. How llong are you in havana for? We wished we done longer. Whereabouts are you staying?

There are loads of vintage car tours. We just arranged ours through our hotel as felt that gave us some guarantee of safety!

Defo go for daquiris at the floridita bar, absolutely amazing!

It's a lovely place to just wander round. The people are friendly but persistant though which I found quite overwhelming the first day.

Yeah! We also did 4n Havana and 10n Varadero (stayed in the Blau)

We did the vintage car tour - be warned, central Havana is pedestrianised, therefore your tour will consist of an hour in the car and then about 3 hours on foot. It's HARD WORK in the heat. It got a bit boring, too.

Club Tropicana is an absolute must. We paid for good seats and were glad we did. it was wife's 30th that night and she ended up up on stage at the end. Bless her.

Something that shocked us in Havana was the lack of somewhere to go dancing - bars have live music until about 10.30-11 and then there isn't much more. You have to go out in to the suburbs and dance with the locals if you're that way inclined. Bit scary. All very friendly though.

In Varadero - definitely venture out at night, there's a bar called Calle 66 (Street 66) which was awesome, live music, dancers, people spilling out on to the streets salsa dancing. A good mixture of locals and tourists, all very friendly, the locals will get you up for a dance (in between the tables, it's really relaxed) ... I think it may have been a bit if a gay spot for the locals too, a few drag queens and rent boys swishing about!

Bec did a sky dive out of an old war helicopter in Varadero - AMAZING (I've seen the video! ha ha)

I could go on forever. Please do give me a shout if you have any specific questions Smiley smile

    Thanks all,
We are doing 4 days in Havana (Iberostar) and 10 days in Varadero (Royalton Hicacos)
That's good to know about the car tours SW I was thinking it would be an easy option for us because we are not really history fans but love architecture and local culture so just want a few snaps of pretty buildings without having to listen to someone telling me how and when they are built ha.
Club Tropicana is on our 'to do list' but there are lots of different ticket options, Did either of you have a meal at the show? Was wondering if the food was good or if it would be better to eat elsewhere first?
Mojito is my fav cocktail so will definitely be heading to La Bodeguita del Medio, not heard of La Floridita so shall add that to the list, any excuse for a cocktail stop.

Definitely wont be sky diving!!! ✈️ ? ?

Did either of you go swimming with dolphins?? Apparently that's a trip option from Varadero but some of the review on TA are quite conflicting.

I didn't do the swimming with dolphins because it was super expensive and involved quite a bit of travelling. I got the impression that you didn't get much actual time in the sea with the dolphins. That was a while ago so things may have changed!

The food at bodeguita is good too. Cheap but really tasty and authentic.

We didn't do swimming with dolphins as the squeaky buggers freak me out! But I have heard mixed reviews for it in varadero too. Apparently the sea isn't clear it's quite cloudy so difficult to see them.

I wouldn't bother eating at CT - I don't imagine it would be great. Some amazing restaurants in Havana. We had a trip in the hotel who directed us to some lovely ones and booked for us (it was necessary in a lot of them)

Also, a lot of taxis are the old vintage cars, we had a few rides in them.
