Curls

yorkshirekiwi, 21 October, 2014 at 08:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Right then Otters, since you lot are partly responsible for turning me into a proper girl (wasn't remotely interested in skincare/clothes/make up/hair before coming to Hitched), i need your advice.

I've just had about 6 inches cut off my hair and would like to put some curls into the shoulder length layers i have left, but I'm at a loss. I've spent hours over the last week googling tips and youtube tutorials on how to curl hair with straighteners as they are the only hair 'tool' i own, but so far, not a curl in sight.

So, over to you, what tools, products and techniques should i be investing in for an idiot proof curly/wavy look like this?

There's a real knack to getting curls with straighteners. You have to pull your hair through while really twisting and do it at the right speed otherwise your hair is either straight or has kinks and not curls.I also find I can do one side much bettee than the other - I get mirror confusion.l You're supposed to alternate the direction of the twist too but I'mhopeless at it lol. You could try are curling tongs. Or velcros rollers/hot rollers.

I do ghd's too for curls, it's a bit hit and miss though, sometimes it looks awesome, sometimes there are certain bits that just won't curl.

My hairdresser did mine for the wedding with an awesome pair of tongs, it took her 5 minutes to do my whole head (plus extensions) - I've been meaning to ask her what the tongs were - i'll investigate and come back to you!

I do love the looks you've posted, if I do my hair that curly though i feel like a mushroom - they just don't sit nicely.

Oh she's just come back to me really quick - they're actually just normal high street ones - Babyliss Pro Curling Wand - it's only £20 in argos Smiley smile

I think you either have the "knack" or don't. I've tried to teach it to my sister a ton of times and she just can't get the hang of it.

I get a small section of hair, put the straightener on it at the root, turn the iron horizontal, flip the hair over the top and then just pull it through. So if you always ensure that the hair is over the top of the iron, it'll curl.

    Does that make sense? haha.

Be careful if you use tongs! Don't burn your face like I did ?

I've been wondering about that Wicky - you must have held the wand to your face for quite some time to burn yourself as you did, no!? ?

After failing with everything to curl my hair I bought one of those babyliss curl secrets....amazing! I haven't tried it on the curliest setting yet but it's basically foolproof.

I was wondering about this. I've seen it advertised but it's not cheap! I always have to get my friend to curl mine with her GHDs as I don't have any (naturally straight hair). It would be nice to be able to curl it myself but I've never really got on with tongs.

Haven't tried since I've cut my hair short but my favourite tool is a clipless wand.

I've just googled this as I've never heard of it. My hair is naturally wavy and not in a good way, so I straighten it every day. I'm so bored with it as it is exactly the same style every day so maybe I should invest in one of these and embrace the curls!

It wasn't mega cheap but worth it! It's easy to use, I can even do the back of my head with minimal effort! It takes me about twenty mins in all I reckon to do my whole head! do occasionally get a chunk of hair stuck in it but it kind stops what it's doing and releases what you were curling n you just ease it off, I've also found the curls/wavy ness lasts all day despite me using no product on my hair. I'd use it every day if I didn't find getting out of bed for work so difficult!!

I have very fine hair that has always been difficult to curl. I'd tried everything but nothing worked, until I got the Babyliss Curl Secret for Christmas last year. They are so good, easy to use and the curls last until I wash my hair. Well worth the money IMO.

Thanks for the tips, sounds like the babyliss curl secret is the way to go for me. I like the idea of fool proof, and the reviews that it works on difficult to curl hair. Might just have to write that letter to Santa!
