Cutting the cake

Ok so this might sound a really silly question.... but, which tier of the cake do you cut ?

I only ask because I just answered the post regarding fake cakes and said I'm considering a fake tier and I know traditionally you keep the top tier, so which tier would be fake ??

    My immediate thought is the bottom one but I think you could probably cut any tier.

    You would normally cut the bottom tier. We're cutting the bottom, having a fake middle with an extra 'replacement' cake in the kitchen which will be served too and keeping the top tier!
