Daft question about trying on wedding dresses

TheFutureMrsB , 5 June, 2014 at 21:48 Posted on Planning 0 20

Hi All, I have an appointment at a bridal shop on Saturday. I'm worried I might want to try on too many dresses to find the right one. Do the shops mind this or would you limit yourself? How many did you all try on before you found 'the one' ? Thanks

You'll find your appt will be for about an hour and a half and they'll let you try as many as they can in that time. If you don't find the right one, then they'll make another appt. Any more and you'll have had enough tbh.

enjoy and here's hoping you do find the right one.

Good for you. It can be fun. Can be hard too. It's good to try different styles tho. Many of us come out with the total opposite of what we had in mind lol. I think in 4 visits, two to the same place with the second to choose between my short list of 2, I tried about 12 dresses in total and tried three or four twice just to be sure. Hth have a great time. Xx

They do block out quite a big bit of space for you. you wont spend long in the ones you dont like. and once you get an idea of what style you like you'll be able to narrow it down a bit more!

Tbh, if it's your first visit, they will probably encourage you try on as many different styles as possible to get a feel for what suits you.

I reckon I tried on a good 10-15 in the shop where I found mine (and about 35 in total that day!) in all sorts of different styles, and yes, did end up with something totally different from what I thought I wanted!

Warning: when I went shopping the first shop I went in had no dresses I liked and I spent the time trying on dresses simply for the sake of it and came away feeling really sad and dejected and like I was going to have to get a dress made bespoke - the next week I went in to another shop and there were about 8 dresses I wanted to try on, and 3 I could have chosen from as 'the one' ... some are lucky and hit jackpot first time, some need to accept that they just need to keep at it!

    What the others have said.....

Also let the staff pick a couple out for you. Mine is the complete opposite of what I had in mind and when the lady picked it out I thought there was no chance I'd like it on. Once I was in it though I knew straight away it was 'the one'

Well, it was double my budget ooops but I've chosen a Romantica dress called Camilla. The shop owner picked it out for me to try on and I was in the frame of mind that I'll try on any style and I got all emotional just seeing it on the hanger! lol. Everyone in the shop agreed it was the nicest on me and I'm so chuffed ? Just need to figure out how to pay for it now Smiley winking x

Thank you ? I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't stick to budget! I don't think the stock photo does it justice, it's absloutley gorgeous in real life. I can't find and photo's of the back but it's button up with lace overlay at the top. Only 385 days until I get to wear it lol x

Do you think if I had the train shortened on this dress it would spoil the look of it? I really didn't want much of a train on my dress but typical I fell in love with this one! x

Congratulations on finding your dress, I love the one you've chosen though I've never seen it in real life. I personally think it's lovely the way it is as I love trains but if you think you would be more comfortable I don't think it would spoil it.

Thank you ? I have nothing against trains on dresses I think they're lovely but I'm getting married at a venue rather than a church or registry office and I didn't want it to be too full on if that makes sense? plus this is my second marriage and certain family members have already said behind my back 'oh she's having a traditional dress then' whatever that's supposed to mean!

Right - ignore those comments, you wear what you want and feel comfortable in Hun. The days of second, time brides, or third in my case getting married in low key places and outfits are long gone. You do it your way.

I thought I'd only be able to wear something very understated, but I'm not. I've ended up with something totally different, maggie sottero janelle. I couldn't be more excited. If you want to get the train shortened then do, but don't feel you have to. The dress is lovely. Keep it lovely, or make it more lovely for you, not because of comments from others. Xx

I have to say I'm kind of quite a quiet, shy type- a people pleaser, my mother calls me! So I'm quite worried about going in and feeling pressured about making a quick decision.

I've found a place I want to try where they don't limit the number of people you bring with you- so I can bring my mum, my sister and my bridesmaids and they can all give me their opinions. This place claims they encourage you to try on as many dresses as possible and also they don't have an appointment system, so you can go in whenever. I figured it takes the pressure off, so I'm going to give it a try!

I dont want to be a killjoy here but I strongly discourage brides from doing this. Its nothing to do with having all these people in the shop, its great fun, but I can guarantee that whichever dress you put on someone will probably not like it and a simple "oh thats not what I thought you would wear" is enough to have a bride in tears. I also had a bride in with her mum, best friend, FMIL, sister and 2 daughters. The teenagers (twins) had very different taste, the sister was jealous of the brides figure, the best friend just luuuuurved everything and mum just wanted her to be happy. FMIL kept stating her son "wouldnt like it if she wore that". The poor bride (and us) nearly ended up in tears are nearly 40 - yes thats 40!! dresses later I had to say to them that I was sorry but getting the bride to try on a £2500 dress "just so they could see what it looked like" was getting beyond a joke.

I always advise a bride to bring a max of 2 people, who will give honest opinions (but wont forget the wishes of the bride), to a first appointment. Where is the element of excitement if the whole bridal party has seen your dress before your wedding day?

Very true, out of my bridal party it is just my Mum and sister/MOH who have seen me in my dress
