Dance classes

jen_84, 5 January, 2012 at 15:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Myself and my OH are starting dance classes tomorrow night - we've booked ourselves onto a six week course of ballroom dancing including things like the Waltz, cha-cha-cha, the jive, foxtrot etc. He's never danced before (even in clubs really) and I had about 3 weeks of ballet classes when I was four and then did jazz and modern for about 18 months as a teenager - I was so bad that when my dance school was asked to be the dancing section of the local panto, I was given the role of a tap-dancing carrot with three under tens - I was about 14!

We just thought it might be something fun to do together instead of sitting in front of the TV every night and it would also be a bit of exercise which we both need after Christmas! Are there any dancers out there with any pearls of wisdom? Any tips for not making complete idiots of ourselves in front of everyone else? Admittedly from looking on the website we will be the youngest couple there by about 30 years, but I still don't want to look like an eejit!

I have a horrible feeling that my toes my be regretting our decision come Saturday morning!

No words of wisdom but just wanted to say that sounds ace! I can't imagine Mr CB ever agreeing to it after their compulsory lessons at (an all boys) school - besides which I'd probably take one of his eyes out with my elbow I'm so uncoordinated!

Hope you enjoy it - promise to tell us all about it?

Wow well done you getting out there.

As per CB, Mr Nutella would never agree to such a thing, although he is pretty nifty with the running man...

Let us know how you get on!! Are you going to have a choreographed first dance?

Just have fun. That's what it's all about.

I dragged Mr RB, nearly kicking and screaming, to salsa lessons a few years ago. He absolutely loved it and we went every week for about a year until he injured his knee. We will go back at some point. Every now and again he will grab me for a twirl in the living room!

    "Dance like nobody is watching."

Seriously, best advice ever. It really doesn't matter if you look like a muppet, if you're enjoying yourself then that's all that matters.

I don't think so - we'd like to be able to do a bit more than just shuffle awkwardly around the dance floor (some people can shuffle and look all romantic doing it, we'd just look clumsy) so the idea is just to make us a little bit more co-ordinated and maybe able to do a couple of spontaneous twirls or something.

I will definitely let you know how we get on though! I'm just worried that the fifty and sixty somethings that seem to go will be much fitter than us and I won't be able to keep up!

I'm hoping we'll be both as bad as each other in the coordination stakes, which will hopefully make it easier to laugh at ourselves!

You'd best not show me up for being 2 left footed Jen_84!

Just have fun. I gave up dancing when I was 16 and I regret it.

I don't know what you could mean. I'm always really co-ordinated. I never drop things, let things slip through my fingers, sit on things without looking and thereby nearly breaking the TV remote countless times, I never throw things one way and they end up going in a completely different direction, never catch something, then manage to drop it, never smash wine glasses when putting them away, never walk into things that have been in the same place for years. Never, ever, ever. Honest.

Well, it was actually really good fun. There were loads of people there, about 25 couples and there were a good few who were about our age or only slightly older. I think we only stepped on each others feet a couple of times and by the end we were cha cha cha-ing with the best of them! We did bump into a few couples and others bumped into us as we were going round the room doing the waltz but everyone was really friendly and no one seemed to mind. Even OH said he found it enjoyable. Looking forward to next week now, although am dreading doing the jive when we get around to that. The cha cha cha was energetic enough! I do have a new found respect for dance professionals though - it took us ages just to get through one set of steps and then we'd keep starting to do the waltz in the middle of the cha cha cha, so how they learn so many and not get confused I have no idea. Really don't think we'll be doing a choreographed dance for the wedding but hopefully we won't look as clumsy by the end of the course. ?

H2B is a better dancer than me, he used to take dance classes when he was younger, something which I tease him about (but secretly I'm jealous of the fact he can dance so well).
