Date of birth on CV, yes or no?

cjb, 20 October, 2008 at 15:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I'm a 30-something year old mum of two... should I put my date of birth on my CV?

Do you have any reason to think your age will count against you in the job you're going for? If not, I'd include it (although you're not obliged to)- otherwise they might assume you're 16/60/whatever, unless they work it out from your education dates (in which case why not just include it?) ?

If you think it might work against you then no, it could be an advantage though. My mum used to leave hers off as she was 40 when she graduated. I think she just liked seeing the confused looks when they were expecting someone 21 and got her! Even though she's a teacher, many potential employers didn't see her time spent bringing up 2 kids as having been well spent, but others saw her being more mature as an advantage - to have decided to teach at 40 meant she was committed to it.

I'd describe myself the same as you. However, I don't put my DOB on my CV. Let your experience, ETA work and otherwise, speak for itself!

Also, AFAIK, it's not something most employers should be considering in light of the age discrimination legislation?

Mmm... tis tricky. I don't know if it will or won't count against me.. it's been a few years since I've had to revise my CV and I wondered if time's had changed!

No, your educational years should be able to tell the interviewee how old you are. It's not longer a requirement as it could be classed as age discriminative is the interviewee chose you over an older person just on seeing the cv's.

Nope, I never have. I believe it's not recommended to anymore due to age discrimination laws etc

I've never included it. I've never seen how it would be relevant. My qualifications and experience are on there and I'm hardly in an industry where age would be at all important (although am struggling to see what that might be)
