Day food, opinions please!

Moonbeam88, 11 August, 2014 at 15:37 Posted on Planning 0 6

We are finalising our day food and need some opinions! OH and I didn't fancy a traditional sit down meal and our venue is pretty relaxed so we have decided to do lots of canapes in place of a starter (and to extend drinks reception / greeting people) and a BBQ for our main meal. However the BBQ is served as a buffet for practicality which i'm not sure that I fancy as we will be having buffet style for evening food. The lady says it works OK, and they call up 2 tables at a time to reduce chaos (we have 80 day guests) but not sure how i'll feel about going up2 get my food in my wedding dress!

has anyone done this / experienced this and how did it work? Or have you got any suggests for any other relaxed foods which could be put in the middle of the table for guests to serve themselves? If we have this style it reduces £/person as they need less waiting staff but trying to think of a compromise!

Our desert is an ice cream cart with meringue and strawberries so our guests can make their own ice-creams / eton mess! i don't mind this idea as it will get people moving again it's just the self serve main meal i'm not 100% sure about!

any opinions / ideas? thanks!

I photographed a wedding last summer where they had a BBQ menu but the food was served to the tables. So they brought burgers, kebabs, corn on the cob etc in dishes & platters and put them in the middle of each table.

My friend had a buffet for her wedding meal (Caribbean food) but the top table were served - I can see what you mean about going up to get food in your dress so that could be an option?

I've been to Turkish and Asian weddings where food is served like this. If you were thinking of something instead of BBQ food what about a mezze?

We're having Tapas style food, but it'll be like a little buffet served directly to each table for people to help themselves to. I'd ask your venue if you can have BBQ served to tables for people to help themselves.

I've been to a wedding where they had a BBQ as the main meal and it worked really well. Everyone got up 1 table at a time (I can't remember if the top table was served or if they just went up first) but they had people stood serving at the counter so you just told them what you wanted and they plated it up which probably saved spillages! I think the only thing we helped ourselves too was things like pasta and salad etc. It was one of the nicest and most relaxed wedding meals I've ever had.

I've been to both. At my first wedding, we had a buffet and the top table to served by waiters while everyone else helped themselves, one table at a time. At my sister's wedding, everyone served themselves from the buffet table - top table first.

    Both worked fine.

I think buffet food is great, as people can choose exactly what they want, and how much they want.
