Dear Fatty

Peaches, 31 December, 2008 at 14:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Dawn French's book which I got for Christmas. Started to read it last night but feel asleep due to jet-lag and it ended up on the floor! The cover, inside sleeves and first few pages have got me hooked already.

Did you know she is 51?? She looks 20 years younger!

So far it's worth the read.

Which books did you get and love?

I got this and have finshed it now, I confess i was a bit disappointed in it, not sure why but it wasn't as entertaining as I thought it would be. Just about to start Julie Walter's autobiography next.....

I've just finished Frank Skinners book "On the Road Again" which I really enjoyed although goodness me he does berate himself for everything. Found out that I've been walking past his Brummie flat for the past six months when dog-walking and never realised. I shall wave from now on! ?

Am now reading Christopher Biggin's autobiography which is soooo luvvie-ish it's unbelievable. He really does name-drop for absolutely no good reason and is "dear friends" with just about everybody it seems. It's good and funny but not particularly well written but then he left school with no qualifications and I hate to say it, but it shows in his writing.

I've also got a (signed!) copy of Julie Walter's autobiography to read which I can't wait! And I've got a Douglas Coupland (Generation X) which I seemed to have missed first time around - I've read all his others so that's last on my list because he's my favourite author.

Dear Fatty is fantastic, so is Julie Walters book. I read them in Venice and really pissed Mr P off with the sniggering that was going on.

Oh no! Some of you find Dear Fatty dull!

I'll have to see how it goes as I'm only a few pages in, but what I've read seemed good so far.

A signed copy of Julie Walter's autobiography .. wow! I'd love to read that. I've got an Amazon voucher I need to spend, so that's what I'll buy. And I also really liked Frank Skinner's first book (I think it was his first), so if I have anything left over from the voucher I'll get his new one too.

Alan Carr's book .. do you mean the stop smoking one? I can't think of a more awful book to have been given as a present lol. Mind you, if it works, that's great. But boring doesn't even touch it for a read lol.

LOL - I think they mean Alan Carr the comedian (Friday Night Project?) not the miserable mind over matter geezer ?

? at the no smoking one inamongst all the biographies! It is the worst written book I've ever read. I had to read it twice too before it worked! Not had a faaaag since though so it was worth it.

I will ask for some of these biogs for my birthday I think. Would love to read Julie Walters', I love her.

I've just finished Dear Fatty this afternoon. I've laughed and cried in equal measure, and loved every moment (except the letters to Madonna which made me feel a little uncomfortable for some reason.)

I've got Paul O'Grady to read next.

Oh dear .. I've clearly got a guilty conscience! Due to the stress (my excuse, I know, I know) of the fire etc., I bought a packet of 10 and smoked half with Mr P. 5 fags clearly won't kill me, but they made me feel bad enough I didn't buy any more.

But I'm laughing at you laughing at me for getting it so wrong LOL

I didn't like the madonna letters either Lumpy... I skipped them after the first one.

I've read up to the first lot of pictures and I'm just loving it. Laughing at so much of it whilst feeling the sadness in some of it.

I've also got Alan Carr and Parky's books to get through. I've recently also read Len Goodman's and Craig Revel Horwood's books too. Craigs was really interesting.

I'm enjoying Dear Fatty too, but agree about the Madonna letters. I was wondering if I had missed something which would make them funny...

I'm put off Dawn French's book by the very fact that it's written in letter format. Does it really work?

I've read a letter-formatted book before and enjoyed it - although it was a far cry from enjoyable in the comedy sense of the word. 'We need to talk about Kevin'

PS. I've ordered Julie Walters, Craig Wotsits and Frank Skinner's book. Costing me nearly the amount of the voucher to get them here, but hey ho! Thanks for the recommendations all ?

    It's funny Doughnut .. I had those 5 over 2 days before Christmas, and I'm still coughing like I smoke full-time ?

And as for alcohol - I'm totally off it now. The thought of drinking turns my stomach after finding 6 empty bottles of scotch which my brother consumed over Christmas on his own ☹️

Half a glass of white last night was too much. Which is a good thing, as when I've had a few I want to smoke too!

"Stanislavsky and The Actor" from one of my best friends, and "An Actor Speaks". I admit this makes me a total geek - but I already want to start attacking the Stanislavsky book with a highlighter pen.
