Desperatly need advice about photographer UPDATE!!

nearlysummer, 8 January, 2010 at 15:19 Posted on Planning 0 14

I booked a photogher about a year ago and paid a £300 deposit this included a pre wedding shoot which we booked however after driving down 1 1/2 hrs there was a note pinned to the door saying she was ill. I left a very snotty voicemail which she replied to saying she had left me a voicemail (which I never got but to be fair my old phone was a bit tempermental) so I said I would book another at a later date. They then sent me an invoice for the remaining money to be paid in feb but the amount was wrong and she included a note saying to book in for a shoot whenever I wanted. I didn't reply over the holiday period because I have kept all the recipts etc so I thought I could ring with the actual amount outstanding and book in for the shoot when we had a chance. I have been ringing for a week and a half now leaving messages and have had no reply. Today the answer phone is off.

I am seriously panicing, what should I do or does any one know anything it is GT photoraphy in the north east

Thank you so much for reading my essay

Hi, gosh that sounds stressful. I wouldn't neccessarily panic too much yet, because they might just be away - does the voicemail say anything about them being away? Have you emailed - if you email you might get a bounceback saying how long they're away for.

Do any of the professionals have a view about them having to pay everything up front - I know my tog is getting 60% on the day of the wedding, but don't know whether paying upfront is more usual?

Hi there, I've just been on their website and noticed they're based in Guisborough which is about 20 mins from me. I don't know if the snow has anything to do with it but it gets pretty bad in that area and sometimes people get snowed in - maybe they can't get to the office.

Sorry I can't be any more help and I hope it works out for you.

I think that's terrible hun, you poor thing!!

I know it's quite snowy there but that shouldn't stop her answering the phone or emails. When's the wedding? how far in advance is she asking for all the rest of the money. I don't usually take all the money before hand.

*hug* try not to worry I am sure it will all be ok

I certainly would refuse to pay the balance (or indeed anymore at all) until you have had your engagement/pre wedding shoot as you may not be happy with her service and this would minimize the risk. At the end of the day it's down to her that you didn't have the shoot on the agreed date!

I don't either, although it is common practice with the vast majority of photographers.

Regarding the phone call issue....many photographers use this time of year to grab a break away, possibly skiing before the wedding season starts again. It could well be that they have done something like this and the anwerphone has simply filled up and can't take any more messages.......

Check out your contract with the photographer...you may be in breach of it by not paying......(not wanting that to sound harsh)....

I am sure that the photographers will reassure you soon.

Hi, thank you so much for all your replies, I can't believe I'm actually writing this but I hadn't thought about the possibility of the snow stopping them getting to work. I would imagine that if you were going on holiday your answerhone message would reflect it. Unfortunatly they don't have an e-mail which I think is a bit odd. I rang another photographer but am reluctant to lose money until I know whats happening. Aaaah I don't know what to do!!!! Thank you for replying though it is really reassuring to get another perspective and some advice. Will keep you updated.

    Hi nearlysummer

The snow has been really bad in the north east, we have about a foot of snow in Durham, so it's highly likely that they can't get to their offices. Also, if they have gone on holiday they probably wouldn't say this on their answerphone as it'd be an open invite to burglars! It is strange about them not having an email address for you to contact them on. As other's have mentioned, have a check of your contract to see where you stand.

    Hi again

Just had a look on their website and found an email address - *****@*************.**.**

They might be able to pick these up if they are away on holiday - worth a try

Thank you all so much I e-mailed her and she is snowed in. Don't know why I didn't think of that and how I missed the email address. Can not thank you all enough. I am so happy as I loved their pictures and was having a total meltdown

I'm glad your minds been put at rest . . . bloomin snow! Its pretty bad where I live (OH has spent the last 2 hours digging my car out of the drive) and Guisborough usually gets it 10 times worse than us.

Glad you've got it sorted out. Our snow started to melt yesterday so it looks as though things may be improving at last, although there is more forecast for the northeast for later today!
