Diabetes

monkey fingers, 27 October, 2008 at 15:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

Does anyone here have diabetes, how was it diagnoised? was it a regular blood test?

I am about to google, but thought I would ask for some first hand experience to start.

Thank you in advance

I dont have it but am checked fairly often as my Grandad does have it. I have fasting blood tests fairly often for my blood pressure stuff and they do a glucose one as well.

There are symptoms that could suggest it but it wouldnt be diagnosed without blood tests.

I think it would usually be a regular blood test or one specifically taken after going to dr with symptoms, followed by other tests.

Please tell me it's not you? ?

My friend and Mother in law have both been diagnosed with diabetes, my mother in law was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After her yearly routine blood tests her blood sugar was found to be outside the expected guidelines and then she had a fasting blood test and was formally diagnosed after that.

My friend was diagnosed with type I diabetes after feeling unwell and having similar blood tests.

    Hope you are okay xx

    Thank you.

Yes it is me, but it is just the district nurses making assumptions at the moment, I just need to know what to expect before I make an appointment. The nurse wanted to a finger prick test but I had just had two glasses of lucozade so decided it probably wasn't worth it.

The symptoms I have been having are . .

    shakes

    feeling cold

    visual distrubance

    weakness down oneside

TMI, constant thrush (though I have put this down to frequent antibiotics

extreme thirst (though this could be because of my sugery)

    chronic fatigue

    Slow healing

These usual occur in the morning when I get up and get dressed or late in the evening before our evening meal.

I need to make an appointment, but it just gets soooooooooooo boring talking about me all the time!

Thank you again for the information x

? Sorry you have more worries MF. I would have thought that with your history it could well be anything and a mixture of things, so probably isnt as straight forward. I think it is a good idea to get it checked though as once you know you have it (or not) you can start to get it sorted. It should just be a blood test (probably fasting) so not too intrusive.

I am quite confident it is not diabetes, it can't be, that would be too daft, I am already half was through the medical dictionary, I am just thinking it is because of all the aneasthetics I have. But I will get it checked out x

    Thank you xxx

MF, I'm sorry to hear that you have to worry about this.

I was tested for diabetes earlier in the year. First it was a normal blood test, then I went back for a glucose test.

The glucose test basically involved them taking a fasting blood test then I had to drink a glucose drink and have another blood test after 2 hours.

Luckily my test was negative and I hope that if you have to have the test, that you get the same results.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 25 years ago, so things have probably moved on a bit since then!! Mine was done via a urine test and then straight to A&E.

Symptoms: constant thirst; rapid weight loss; tired all of the time; thrush; and dizziness.

I would have thought if you doing a finger test would have been ok even with the lucozade. If you don't have diabetes your bloods still wouldn't have gone above the 7 mark.

Also, if you have sugar in your urine (a sign) your wee will be very dark and smell.

Thank you for responding, I have the opposite problem to the losing weight symptom, so that's a positive.

I have just been to the surgery for some physio and tried to book an appointment with my GP, because they all know me so well the receptionist has insisted on having the gp call me tonigh. I feel mortified to be taking up more of her time and actually feel quite tearful at always being such a drag on her resources, I am sure she must roll her eyes whenever she sees my name. I wanted to start taking some vitamins first to see if they help things, but Mr MF has asked me to talk to the GP as he is so worried about me. I hate being such a worry, especially when I am sure it is just me being tired and a wuss, and not diabetes.

Thank you so much for your sharing your experience with me x

Thank you, I have got myself into such a flap. I have no idea what to say on the phone that doesn't sound moany and pathetic, I worry she is going to think I asked her to call when it wasn't what I wanted at all. I think she is going to be cross with me for being so wimpy (not as in the burger place or the character from popeye)

My GP called and was lovely and told me not to worry about having her call, she had tried to catch me at the surgery but Ned was shouting and so I didn' t hear her and we then disappeared. Anyway, I have to start snacking every two hours and on Wednesday morning ask the district nurses to come early to take bloods.

She thinks it is a mixture of my sugar levels falling and my low blood pressure (90/50 at it's highest) making me feel so wretched, so I am hoping that by snacking I will be feeling much better, I just hope I can stop being so tierd soon.

My limbs feel so heavy and after an hours shopping on Saturday I was too weak to climb our stairs and fell asleep for 3 hours, today I have slept for two hours and still feel weak and exhausted. I just want to be strong enough to take ned to the swings and to singing group, if I could do those two things again I would be the happiest person alive. (Oh and I would like to be able to feed him his breakfast without my hand shaking so much, so we both end up wearing most of his weetabix)

I have also been told to stop drinking lucozade which I have been drinking to try and make me feel less drained, she explained it has the reverse a/e ffect(?)

Thank you everyone for being so lovely as normal, I know I am a pain and very needy, but I really appreicate all your support and loveliness, especially as I know so many of you have such a lot going on in your own lives, I only wish I could offer you the support you do to me. I promise to try and stop being so feeble very soon (though do think if the hitched awards are reinstated I should be a top contender for 'most neediest hitcher'?. ?

See there you go... lovely sounding GP!!

She is right about the lucazade (funnily enough being a doc), its basically full of sugar and makes your blood sugar spike and hten you feel rubbish afterwards and want more (designed by the manufacturers like that so you keep going back for more - and I can say that as I work for them lol)

when you say snacking what sort of snacks do you mean, you need to try and eat stuff that will not make your blood sugar spike, oat cakes are good for that - they are a low GI food and keep your blood sugar more stable (https://www.the-gi-diet.org/lowgifoods/)

hope you feel better soon MF you deserve some time off being ill

Thank you my sweetheart (Did you see my thank you the other day for the card that you sent? if not, thank you, it made me chuckle)

She has suggested eating 1/2 a banana every couple of hours, I will look into oat cakes, thank you so much for the link.

Lucozade is very addictive, I love the taste and do feel better immediately after drinking it but it doesn't last long, strangly enough just before the GP called, I said to Mr MF I wondered if the lucozade is doing more harm than good!

    xx

She sounds like a nice GP. Im glad she doesnt think its diabetes. I hope the snacking trick will help. I am sure that your blood pressure cant be making you feel well, mines the opposite and is very high and if I forget my pills I feel awful.

BTW you arent needy, you dont demand peoples attention, you are always so lovely and polite and always worry about other people. You just need a bit more help and advice about things because you are poorly and dealing with a lot of things ?

I did, lovely lady, I did, unfortunately I saw it just as I was about to go out and didnt have time to reply and then I completely forgot about it when I was next online, glad it made you smile, I saw it and thought it was perfect for you!!

The fruit and spice oatcakes are very nice, they sell them in sainsburys oh and the very berry ones, not sure about the savoury ones - I have more of a sweet tooth than a savory one.. Bananas are also very good (which is why athletes eat them) but Im not a big banana fan - only like them when they are still slightly green..

My dad's was brought on initially because of the medication he was on after having a fairly major op. It went away again for a period once he came off the medication. (Should clarify that type 2 diabetes is prevalent in his family and he has since been diagnosed with it).

Hi MF, just spotted this before I go to bed, but couldn't not reply. i was diagnosed with type1 3 years ago, had rapid weight loss but was constantly hungry, thirst, exhaustion. Self diagnosed at work in A&E, then diabetic team confirmed it. Hope in your case it's just the combination of everything you've been through and too much lucozade, and I can confirm that the Nairns sweet oatcakes are good ?

Hope it settles down soon x

Poor MF, you're having a tough time of it lately it's no surprise you're feeling poop! I'm sure there are lots of things it could be other than diabetes, even stress can make you feel a lot of those symptoms. I know I had quite a few and was found to have a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Definitely eat oatcakes - they're so nice!

    Thank you so much everyone.

I am quite impressed that my body has had me craving porridge this week- have never wanted it before and apparently that is a good food for me to eat . .says my Dr, she wasn't too impressed with my consumption of beef monster munch and wispas. She also seemed a little shocked after she asked me if I was drinking alcohol and I announced ' no, do you think that may be the problem? I felt fine when I was drinking wine every night'

I think many of my symptoms can be explained by the other stuff going on, especially with the ileostomy and constant infections, also I know I don't always get to rest as much as I should, so often end the days being dead on my feet!

    Thank you again everyone xxxxxx

Sorry this is a bit late now as it sounds as if your doctor has ruled out diabetes, but I do have type 1 (diagnosed in 1991). This was discovered when I went to the doctors because of thrush, but I had also lost about two stone in weight and felt very tired and weak. On my way to work I was glad when the pelican crossing was red because it meant I had an excuse to stop walking and have a rest!

The symptoms you've described sound like low blood sugar, not high. This can be a sign that your body's producing too much insulin, which can be because of insulin resistance, which is sometimes a precursor to type 2 diabetes, but not type 1. If you google reactive hypoglycemia you might find some advice which will help with this.

I have found that eating too much of even low GI carbs still cause my blood sugar to swing about - I'd recommend protein snacks rather than lots of carbs to keep blood sugar levels stable. My health food store sells little packs of lightly roasted and seasoned pumpkin seeds, and cereal-like bars made from nuts and seeds called Wallaby bars, which I find very satisfying, and they contain lots of fibre, minerals and good fats.

I hope you feel better soon and get some answers.
