Did anyone else have a make up trial and think they could do as well themselves?

MISSMAYFLOWER, 5 February, 2011 at 16:35 Posted on Planning 0 23

I've just had my make up trial and although its quite nice, i just feel like I could do better myself!

I don't normally wear a lot of make up - only some mascara and tinted moisturiser so don't want anything to heavy. The make-up girl has used a light foundation but i feel a bit like a doll with a shiny face and a blusher line.

I don't know what to do know, whether to just do my own or stick with this girl as its "right" to have my make up done!

Did anyone else feel like this and if you did your own - did you find it too stressful??

I've always hated other people doing my makeup.

Go on youtube and look at the make up tutorials on there.

I'm doing my own for the wedding. I'm all for doing make up yourself, at least you'll look and feel like yourself. It's nice to get pampered, but if you're left feeling you could do better yourself..... do it and it'll be fabulous xxx

Thanks miss.understood - I think you're right, if i don't love it then its not going to be worth it. I want to still be me on the day! Will have a look on youtube - thanks for the tip

I've been married before, and i did my own make up for that wedding, and i'll be doing it again this time around. Get plenty of practise in, and if you don't like it first time....hey, it wipes off!

Just follow the colours and shades on a picture or tutorial, apply it lightly and add more if you want it stronger, darker or more vibrant.....and enjoy.

I rather enjoyed make up shopping for the wedding, probably the only time i could justify 43quid on eyeshadow and brushes lol xxx

I once had a make-over which included make-up and I hated it! She put me teal eyeliner on and everyone thought it looked gross! I can't stand anyone coming near my eyes either and it really annoyed me just sitting there cringing everytime she came near my eyes! My daughter asked if I wanted my make-up doing for her wedding but I prefer to do it myself!

I was the opposite to you, I really loved my make up trial, she did it so natural but made my skin look healthy and smooth, it was lovely to be pampered too. I would say though, if you feel you can do the same or better do what Miss Understood said and do some trials yourself. Smiley smile

I am having a free consultation at Benefit (so they can show me what to do with the stuff I already have) and then I am just going to practice and do my own!

I decided faily early on that i didnt want a makeup artist doing my makeup. I do mine every day and feel confident in doing it on the day. Will have a couple of practises first to get it perfect though. Go with your gut instincts.

I did my own makep, I couldn't stand anyone doing mine as I never look like "me" and looked like a painted doll.

?I've been for a free consultation at Estee Lauder today and the girl there was fantastic. I bought quite a bit from them which wasn't amazingly cheap, but it will last for a long time and I will be able to play around with recreating the look before the day. I'm really pleased with the shades she used, and would definitely use them again. So my view is it's better to do that than pay for a make-up artist, especially if you're not happy with the result! ?

I had mine the other day and felt like crying afterward...she wouldnt let me look till the end.

When I did I did look like a drag artist.

Fake eyelashs as ong as spider legs and gold glitter eyeliner and horribly patcy lipstick.

Was awfull and I paid £60 for the privilage.

Im in the same boat as you and wondering if should do it myself...but then she did my foundation perfectly...my whole face was flawless and I dont normaly wear foundation cause I can never find one that suits me.

Surely the whole point of a trial is for the make up artist to do your make up and then if you don't like it she changes the relevant bits until you're happy? I just assumed they all worked like this. It's such a shame you've not had a good experience.

SarinaCain - I feel a bit like you - some bits were nice but overall I just think it wasn't amazing and I don't look as good as I did for example at my engagement party when i did my make up myself!

Sherrie - a painted doll was how I felt, just not me

I've booked in for an estee lauder trial in a couple of weeks so I'll see how that goes and whether I think its better then the trial - I'm sure the make up girl would be my make up fine on the day - I'm just not sure I want to pay for fine!

Forgot to say if you go to MAC or something like that they will match a foundation to your skin tone and can recommend you on a good one so im sure it would be great even doing it yourself x

I'm the same as you, I hardly wear any make-up normally and am not that confident putting it on so I thought my wedding would be a good opportunity to get it done "properly". Anyway, two trials later I'm giving that idea up as a bad job and have instead had two make-up lessons at the local Benefit counter so I can do it myself on the day. Of course it would be lovely to have that extra bit of pampering but not if I'm paranoid I'm going to end up looking like I've been tangoed!

My friend who has a beauty salon is doing mine as a wedding present, she did a lovely job but not so lovely that I would have paid for it, although I am pleased i will be wearing expensive make up as it will stay on all day I should think rather than re applying. I always do my own make up and don't think its ever looked bad in photos really so if she hadnt offered i would have done my own. If you werent happy with it do your own! Its is probably less stressful doing your own, particularly if you dont wear much.

I am having someone to do a trial and we will see as at 42 I need all the help I can get lol ! If you feel uncomfortable definately do your own x

Being a photographer I've seen way to many bad makeup jobs at a wedding. Some MUA's are really awesome but an awful lot seem to like the doll look. If you can find one that matches you then go for it, otherwise I say do it yourself. If all else fails there's photoshop Smiley winking

I did my own after having it done at the Clinique counter and then buying the stuff. But then I don't usually wear any and went minimal anyway

I wear a lot of make up & have a make up drawer full of clinique, estee lauder, benefit, lancome etc. Ive done make up for family weddings etc before but I got my make up done for my cousins wedding by a local beautician and loved it - she done my eyeliner absolutely beautifully & a lot finer that I have ever managed. And it lasted all day long so I have her booked to do mine. She is next door to the hairdresser and is really nice - Im getting a trial done before going to try on my dress and have a a picture from a magazine of a girls whos make up I really like so Im going to take it with me.

I just dont want the added stress / hassle on the day of doing my own - Im leaving it in the hands of a professional who I already habe experience of.
