Did you haggle with any part of your dress?

Chedi, 21 June, 2012 at 20:49 Posted on Planning 0 4

I was just wondering if this was the 'done' thing? The dress I'm considering getting is £999 on the tag, before any alterations and accessories. My original budget was £1000 for dress alone before accessories, but I got my shoes really cheap so do have room to add alterations into my accessories budget (on the basis I'll try get earings etc for christmas presents)... however, in a way, I'll still be maxing out my budgets and I'd rather come under budget, as I'm sure we all want.

I wouldn't really know what the suggest/where to start, and being I've never done this sort of thing I was hoping for help from those that have - unless its just something you generally don't do ?

I'm not sure if this is a help, because I haven't been dress shopping yet, but... When the OH and I went looking at rings (to give him an idea to my taste because of his nerves in getting the right one), we looked at quite a few, and in all the excitement the assistant miss-understood my description of which rng I wanted to try... Thinking I meant the 11 thousand pound beauty in the window!! Haha... As if! My OH nearly fainted!! Anyway, in all our jesting, again the assistant got the wrong impression, and I think thougt I was trying to "work" on the OH to buy me it!!... So he goes off, and when he comes back he offers us 2 and a half grand OFF!!! I culdn't believe my ears, we hadn't even asked for discount. That was a lesson learnt for me, discount is definitely do'able!

Good luck with the dress xxx

? that did make me chuckle! We're actually going to look at wedding rings at the weekend together so we can see what can go with my ER and what he likes. I hope we dont confuse the sales person as we're only looking too ?

    But thank you anyways ?

I was going to buy mine as soon as I saw it - but the woman in the shop clearly didn't realise that because she was very eager to offer 10% off if we bought it there and then... which we would have done regardless.

I think you may as well give it a bash!

If you don't ask you don't get. My dress was tagged at £1080 but my budget was £1000 all in, I asked if there was anything she cold do and she said if I buy the sample(which happened to be my size) I can have 20% off so I spent £860! I practically bit her hand off as if I'd bought a new one id have to get it altered anyway. Got for it! She also dry cleaned it at no extra cost to me.

There is definitely room to the ask the question. Sometimes it's as much about 'how' you ask as 'what' you ask.

I'm all for getting a bargain. The trick is knowing when to stop before you really wind someone up so much that they go back to the original price! lol

Ask politely, explain that you have a budget of x (make sure it's slightly lower than you actually have so there is room for manoeuvre) and see what they come back with. Remember the power of silence. Leave it hanging in the air. If they want the sale, they'll fill that silence with an offer or at least a response.

And ultimately, shop around. Be savvy, check online for alternative options/suppliers.

In the end, as we all know, in reality these dresses are overpriced, we normally would never dream of spending quite so much on an outfit we'll only wear the once but we're caught in the magic and ultimately we need that frock!

Good luck with it all. Let us know how you get on.
