Did you sell your wedding dress? If so, please help!

Spangler, 4 October, 2010 at 20:20 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hello fellow old marrieds! I am looking at selling my wedding dress *sob* and was wondering percentage wise how much I should expect to recoup? The dress is a bespoke Ian Stuart, is in a box and has been dry cleaned... My concern is you could buy a brand new dress for the price I want for mine - do you think someone would buy it for a decent price?

TIA x

My original dress is an ian stuart and was £1500 and I want £700 for it, it's brand new, unaltered with tags still on. It really depends on how much you want for yours whether people would buy it at that price as it's worn, no matter how gorg and immaculate you still think it is, to the buyer it's a worn gown. If it's a gown that's unusual and not many are on sale as worn you might get a decent amount.

Ha thanks Tee - they would be blaahdy expensive cushions!! I know gowns depreciate in value but I was looking to get at least half of what I paid.. Might put it on Preloved and see if anyone is interested. I want to keep it and wear it all the time!! x

Worn, unaltered Maggies go for £250 max. I lurked on preloved for ages, and this seems to be about the price dresses of that level go for. I guess thats about 25-30% of the brand new price. I've seen designer dresses advertised for more, but don't know what the sucess rate is. Have a look on sellmyweddingdress.com which has the biggest selection, but advertise it first on preloved because it has no advert fee.

Thanks for the tip enelya. Tee - do you mean making it short for re-sale or making it short for me to wear again? x

    Totally depends on the designer.

I would think for someone like maggie, essence, ellis etc - £250 maximum

Someone like JP, Augusta Jones maybe about 750 depending on dress

    VW- half retail price

You'll def get more for an ian stuart than you would for a maggie. I'm looking for just under half of what I paid and mine is brand new so not sure you'd get half but you never know. I've got mine on gumtree, preloved, adtrader and ebay.

Hiya, I'm not yet an old married (just verging on the old!!) Just wanted to let you know i bought my Jenny Packham dress 2nd hand and paid a smidge under half of what it would be brand new and it had been altered. Luckily to the right length, but needs re-adjusting on the top, but then so would a new one! So I reckon an Ian Stuart would fetch around the same 1/2 price re-sell value or maybe a bit more??

    DG xx
