Different Engagement Pictures

mandunc14, 22 February, 2013 at 16:07 Posted on Planning 0 16

Hi Everyone

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for some unique places to have engagement pictures done. I believe our photographer is from Stafford, so we are looking in an area from Midlands to Cheshire. (haha and being from Canada, I have no idea that those places are 100% correct but I think so!)

Our venue is very traditional with lots of grass, open land, ponds etc so we want to go in the opposite direction, and we prefer something different - so not a playground, a park, etc. Probably something more urban or even quirky. Oh and they will be taken end of July if that matters, in the afternoon.

Thanks for any insight Smiley smile

There is Stratford upon Avon (the home of William Shakespeare) , you could have the shoot along the canal perhaps with a barge in the background?

What about going to Birmingham or Manchester for some urban backgrounds - we've done shoots in both so can suggest some specific locations if that helps.

Id love some specific locations and I think my fiance said Birmingham is better. I was thinking the Printworks in Manchester but thats a bit far for the photographer.

Some ideas I have (in my head- no idea if they work) - an alley way, perhaps with some grafiti, an old building, a hotel rooftop, a train/subway station, near the airport (we are going for a travel theme!)

I love unique shots and am open to anything especially as wedding day will be so typical. ?

Somewhere with grass and trees a little before golden hour is my favourite.

Just to pick up on this. As it's July, early afternoon would literally be the worst time to do it.

After 7:00pm will provide much better light, and thus will be allot more flattering.

Its going to depend when both the photographer and I are available. I am only visiting the UK for 10 days so a lot needs to be crammed into a very short period of time!

Maybe other photographers can chime in, but think it's definitely worth trying for a time where your likely to look your best.

In my opinion midday should be avoided at all costs, as the only places your going to get nice pictures is open shade, and then the backgrounds will be overexposed, so it won't matter where the shoot is.

There's the Custard Factory with all the artwork on the walls, then you can walk into town. Top of a multi story car park is always quiet from cars and good for some different shots!

For an industrial look how about Sheffield's Kelham Island? If you google kelham island and look at the images you will see what i mean.

Otherwise google Phlegm sheffield - he is an amazing grafitti artist and you'll find his work around the city. (In Kelham Island, Shoreham Street etc) Also Kid Acme is fantastic.

We recently had a shoot done at The Custard Factory. Our photographer only captured a small part of it. There are lots of other things there and it's a great place for urban photo's.

If you are wanting grafitti etc I would head to Digbeth in Birmingham, it has the Custard Factory, some great artwork and industrial areas that makes great backgrounds. If you wanted a more modern urban look try Brindley Place in Birmingham. This is near the canals which also makes for good shots. it can get busy so early or later in the day is probably best!

if you do head to Manchester, try Castlefields.
