Digital camera recommendations

MadPuss, 24 April, 2009 at 16:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Probably been done a million times before but here goes:

Help Please!

I'm after a new digital camera, preferably small (so will fit in pocket/handbag type thing), quick and easy to use but takes fantastic pics. It's to take snaps of the kids & pets really. I have a DSLR amongst others (alright I fess up, I have a not inconsiderable camera collection) but they're all so BIG and take a lot of carrying. I just want something that will still take great pics but will fit in my bag for days out etc.

All advice welcomed, budget not really an issue, maybe £300 tops.

Thanks in advance

Well under your budget, and probably a bit of a simple one if you're used to an SLR, but i have this one

i think the picture quality is excellent, and it has loads of functions that you'd normally find on a higher spec model.

I have a canon ixus 860 which i love, and it can take some fab shots. is v small and fits in my handbag with ease. Nice big screen on the back, no complaints at all so far.

I think the current 800 model is the 870, which I think is just an updated version of the 860.

We have a wee ixus as well as an slr and its absolkutely fantastic. Would recommend canon to anyone tbh, and they have lots of options around your budget.

I'm currently after a Panasonic Lumix TZ5, I was hoping to catch one at a good price because the TZ7 is out or nearly out. Sadly no bargains though.

Thanks folks, had a quick look at those.

I quite like the look of the canon ixus range but choosing between them could be hard. Might have a look at some in town tomorrow before deciding.

I have one and I love it! H has offered me his DSLR, but I'm having so much fun with my Lumix that I'm going to stick with it as it's delivering pretty much everything I want from a camera at the moment

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC FX37 - it's a great little P&S camera to carry around every day.

I also have the Panasonic Lumix TZ5. It came out top on the Gadget Show! It's very easy to use, has a wide angle lens, huge screen and 10x optical zoom.

    Panasonic Lumix TZ7

    100%

Slightly over your budget but worth every penny i spent on it 2 weeks ago - photos are amazing even for me who has a tremor - no wobbly pics.

Perhaps a TZ5 would offer a few less features and be a little bit cheaper??

We've had 2 Canon Ixus - the original II and the 700, both were excellent. The 700 lasted over 5 years, has been snowboarding, diving (with a waterproof case) and on every holiday, day trip etc. Motor for the lens broke recently but as I said after 5 years of hard use.

We're looking to get another but am as confused as you about the range! Prob going to go for the most mega pixels and screen size and compromise on the added features. Top model is the 990 now.
