I used to work with a secretary who used to write her thoughts on what was being dictated into the body of the letter. So, for example, if she wasn't sure of the spelling, she would put the word and then "I'm not sure if this is spelled correctly" or she would guess the word.

One new person got a letter from her once, ran out of time and didn't check it, assuming it would be okay and posted it out. God knows what the person who received it thought as it was full of her thoughts, mis-spellings and she had misheard him when he had said bats and thought it was cats, typing a whole paragraph about hundreds of them nesting in this person's attic and how it was illegal to get rid of cats under British Law. We never did get a response.

It's because she underlined Newcastle. Instead of writing Newcastle under lyme, she thought he had told her to underline Newcastle.

    Now I get it!

Geography is not my strong point, I was working for Virgin Atlantic when someone phoned to say they wanted to go to Huston. I told her she needed Virgin Trains, I then hung up and said to my colleague how dim some people where thinking they needed Virgin Atlantic to get to Huston station.

The joke is that the SIL thought she was told Newcastle..underline so followed the instruction and underlined it.

Reminds me of the time my boss my then boss was interviewing people to work in the Park and Ride car park for the millenium dome. He wanted to hold the interviews in Stratford. I was on leave, so he booked the venue himself. I got back the day of the interviews and looked at his paperwork. The Shakespeare Hotel, Stratford...........upon Avon.

The name of the hotel was a bit of a clue to the fact he was at the wrong end of the country.

Arse. I thought I was being all clever knowing that Newcastle and Newcastle-Under-Lyme were in completely different places. What a loser. <hangs head in shame>
