Dinner thread

SophieM, 3 March, 2009 at 16:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 33

What am I going to have tonight? I've got swede, PSB, cauliflower, carrots, cabbage and sweetcorn that rather need using up, and sod-all else. Cooking for just me and I do not feel like stir-fry or veg curry, in fact I don't much feel like anything worthy and use-up-veg-y.

    <boring> Veg pasta bake?

I'm making a goulash but have just realised I've got no peppers, which pretty much sums up how today is going ?

Can't you buy meat and do a roast? I had PSB on Sunday and it was lovely with a nice bit of pork and some crackling.

Tonight we're having Cottage Pie courtesy of Mr Marks and Mr Spencer lol!

We're having feck-all tonight, as I feel too stressed to contemplate cooking or eating. I had planned some bread-making to rustle up a nice home-made pizza, but that's out of the window.

If I calm down, I may go to the shop for a tin of soup.

Chop it all up, boil it, add a stock cube and make soup? The stick any excess in the fridge/freezer for later.

We're supposed to be having enchiladas but I've just realised I added the sauce instead of the spice mix, so I've just chucked the spice mix in and hope it works!

Hmmmm. Thanks, but no thanks. Wrong sort of veg for pasta bake, soup too worthy, roast dinner for one impractical.

    Neeeeext ?

    Well if it's just for Soph, I wouldn't bother - I'd get a takeaway! ?

We're having pancakes tonight because H missed out on Shrove Tuesday last week (he was away) so it's cheesey ones for mains and then lemon and sugar for dessert. Yum!

I'm not inspired by your list. Or at least I am, to call out for pizza ? Sorry!

We're having sausages, mash and baked beans. So it's not as if I know much about inspiration either!

We're having stew. Its fairly virtuous in that there's an awful lot of veg in there, but slightly less virtuous as i used 3/4 of a bottle of red wine in it...

We're having pizza from the freezer (Ham, cheese and pineapple for me and pepperoni for H). Quick and easy as H is off out to a meeting tonight and i've got a date with the sofa and our tv - which will have exclusive what I want to watch on it for once!

Follow our lead and get a pizza in ?

Salmon & watercress sauce, spinich and new potatoes.

Can't solve the pepperless goulash or suggest anything better than soup for all that veg.

I'd roast the veg and do some pasta to go with it, maybe add some cheese.

I'm having baked sweet potatoes with cottage cheese

I'm steaming a suet pudding with steak & kidney filling

(which my nana just made after she did my ironing today, bless her she is only 96)

Then she made some jam tarts as we got onto talking about Victorian food in light of Hestons programme tonight & the mad hatter theme.

We're doing a Zebra and having sausage, mash and beans.

Would a veg risotto be at all appealing? Otherwise make a soup..wait, wait...freeze all of it so your veg isn't wasted, and get a takeaway ?. I'd like Baron's dinner too. I had plans to make bread today but had the boychild home from school so I've nothing all day ?.

Colcannon & sausages. It's a bit of using up what veg I have kicking around & what's in the freezer before we go away for a long weekend. I have a few plums too, so may make a crumble to help use them up...

Sorry Sophie, I'm struggling to think of something exciting to do with your veg. Could you do some sort of Spanish omlette thing?

Swede is lovely fried with onions and bacon, and then made into a pie with a mustardy crust, which you could serve with t'other veg.

Or cauliflower cheese with anchovies in the sauce, grigson stylee.

We are having carbonara and salad. Dull but tasty.

Sophie, if you're still deciding, how about an omelette? You could add cheese to make it feel less worthy...

I had a bit of a culinary disaster here. I tried to make bean burgers and they tasted like what I imagine car tyres to taste like. I ordered a Dominos instead (I had a voucher, that's a good excuse!).
