Ditch or Keep? Advice needed please, other than my mothers!

Charliebob, 6 August, 2014 at 13:48 Posted on Planning 0 29

Hi, I know this may come across as a little silly, but it's really bugging me and would appreciate any advice of what you would do in this situation.

My mother is one for those snarky comments. So I thought I had found THE DRESS. I have expensive taste (don't we all!), but not a bank balance to match. I came across my ideal dress - Simple, Elegant, and Plain. The Maggie Sottero -Madison.

http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/images/dresses/20743/1024x768/Maggie-Sottero-A-line-Madison-bright-white-2010-96845.jpg?ts=1406996979?ts=1406996979

It was originally £1200, then down to £799 in the sale and then put in the outlet section for £199! I nearly fell off my chair when I saw the price! Perfect I thought. I called up and they said there was a minor repair needed that a seamstress can easily do, but other than that perfect condition. So I went ahead and bought it

Now, this is when it turned nasty. I told my mother all of the above, and the reaction that I got was upsetting. She basically said I should be embarrassed that I bought an outlet gown, that needed repairing, and that I should have splashed my cash for the big day. And well it has sort of has thrown me off it a bit, because every girl wants her mum to be excited as much as she is.

So what do I do? Do I keep it, and stick to my guns and wear it proud that I have nabbed myself a bargain?

Do I take her advice? Have I made a mistake in buying an outlet gown?

I know this all seems a bit OTT but there aren't many people I can talk to about bridal gowns, and not many of my friends are married.

Thanks, C.

Spend your money on what is important to you.

For your Mum, a brand new expensive dress is top priority. You aren't your Mum and you have a great bargain. What is more important to you? Spend your money on that instead and just ignore your Mum on this. Don't tell anyone else about the cost: it's none of their business anyway!

Dresses for one day aren't important to me at all so I've spent relatively little on my and BMs' frocks, but live entertainmnet and a free bar is important to us so we've splashed on that!

You said this is your IDEAL dress. How much you paid for it is irrelevant. why would spending loads of money on another dress be better? Stick to your guns. You'll soon find the costs mounting up - be pleased that you've made a saving here so you have some extra cash for all the things you've forgotten about crop up.

And I don't mean to be rude... BUT... tell your mother to pull her head in.

I think you shoul keep the dress and be happy that you got the dress you wanted at such a amazing price, you don't have to tell anyone you got it reduced if you don't want to! I think it's a shame your mum has reacted in that way! My dress was reduced from 200 so I am a real bargin basement bride! ?

Keep it! My mum had a go at me for having my dress made by a dressmaker I found online, and made me doubt my instincts - not good. If you love the dress, don't worry about how cheap it was or where it came from.

You tell your mum that you'll thank her not to make you feel bad about a decision you were really happy about, and you wear your dress with pride.

Definately keep the dress!! what a bargain!! and if its the right dress for you then fate! :-)

If you want to keep her happy, you could always tell her a white lie and say you went for a new one from a bridal shop but personally i would tell her (if it was my mum) to get a grip! the price of a dress does not make it a prettier or uglier dress and who's going to know? i'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to walk down the aisle with price tag hanging out the back anyway! :-/

hope you don't think i was being too harsh then, i can't think how to word it any differantly lol

Exactly what everyone else has said, just because it has been moved to "outlet" doesn't downgrade the dress, it's your dream dress, If I knew I could get my dream dress the way you did, I would do it without hesitation, and Congratulations on bagging such a bargain.

    To echo everybody else...KEEP IT!

If it's your ideal dress and you absolutely love it, surely it's better to spend £199 on it and have the other £1000 to put towards other things. Nobody needs to know how much you paid for your dress. At the end of the day it is still the same dress whether you spend £1200 or £199!

Your dress is gorgeous, and remember it's yours not your mothers ?

Keep it! Once your Mum sees you in it, she will understand why you bought it, and she will see how much you love it.

Good on your for your bargain! Loads of others will be super jealous at this great find! x

Not a mistake, there is nothing wrong with an outlet gown at all. My first wedding dress was a shop second from Ebay, cost next to nothing, local seamstress fixed it up. This time I am having a Pagan handfasting dress from Ebay which cost about 1/10 of what a wedding dress would, but it is the dress I want and I love it.

If I were you I would be so pleased that I have got the dress I want at a great price, and saved hundreds of pounds that you can now use elsewhere in the planning.

Thanks once again ladies, you have all really lifted my mood! I tried it on once again, and it's the ONE. Going to put that 1k I saved towards lots of other things, and making sure my guests have a fab time! I am keeping zipped about the price from now on, my little secret Smiley smile

    Ignore her.

I ended up buying a Maggie Sottero and because it was a new design there's no chance that I could buy it from an outlet. If it was possible I definitely would without even having to think about it.

The only thing that matters is that it's the dress you love and a bargain makes it even better!

I think mothers just tend to get involved - I'm going to Vietnam to get my wedding dress made along with bridesmaids, ties for all the men and wedding rings. My mum told me it didn't work out cheaper etc but I get a holiday with my bridesmaids and all the costly stuff for less then 1.5K (and that includes flights!) as well as decorations - silk laterns for about 50p each.

It's your day and it's great that you have found something you love without spending a fortune!

Your mum's reaction reminds me of the saying 'Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.' The price put on it should be how happy you feel when you wear it and how chuffed you are for saving that money for other aspects of your wedding - it's a great find and you will look lovely.

Tell your mum not to make any more comments about it and to wait until she sees you in it! As soon as she sees you she'll see how beautiful you look and it won't matter where you got it from and how much you spent!

I also got my Maggie Sottero dress in the sale (although not quite as good a bargain as yours!) with very minor damage (one of the eyelets on the buttons needed mending, so really minor) and I don't care! I saved hundreds to get the exact same dress that would've looked exactly the same ordered in new!

Ok. Just to put things into perspective. It's still a designer dress. It was reduced, then reduced again. IT'S A FREAKIN' DESIGNER DRESS!!!!!!!!! WHAT A BLOODY BARGAIN!!!!!! As a fellow bargain hunter, let me tell you I'm proud of you for finding such a bargain!!! 9 times out of 10 you need to get a seamstress involved in your dress purchase anyway to make it a perfect fit, what's the difference?! It looks gorgeous hun, it's still the exact same dress, whether you spent £1200 or £199, I know what I'd rather pay!!!

Just tell her you bought the exact same dress full price from an amazing bridal shop. Then go ahead and do your own thing with the outlet one. Ruddy amazing deal if you ask me £199! So jealous. X
