DIY projects-share yours

irrelephant, 15 August, 2011 at 18:39 Posted on Planning 0 23

I'm looking for little DIY bits and pieces I can do for the wedding, both to keep costs down and because i love the shabby chic home made look.

I'm going to make:

My own confetti cones

Paper chains

my pew ends, although not sure what yet. I might just use long trailing organza bows or I've seen some button hearts on hobbycraft that look pretty:

I think i might also decorate the jam jars for the candles with either a wire handle with beads on it, or make them frosted like this:

Im making lots. I made all my invites, order of service, menus, and name place card, oh and table names. I am also making my table plan. This will be printed on pieces of fabric and embellished and then pegged on a washing line.

I have nearly finished my "Mr & Mrs Brookes" bunting to hang above the top table which I have made out of a range of co-ordinating fabrics. I have also made a collage/photoboard which co-ordinates all my stationary . Finally I am making my own favours. Little mini jars filled with sweets and topped with a circle of fabric and co-rodicating tag.

A close friend is also making my cake ( I do make celebration cakes but thought I had better pass this job onto a friend) and she is also making me some cake pops!!!!

You just reminded me about my own seating plan! I'm planning on using escort cards instead of place names so will be using brown luggage tags pegged onto a string 'washing line' alongside pegged up photos of me and D.

So far I've made my own favours (see above for an action shot) and I've also started practicing my old embroidery skills so that I can embroider my married name onto a pair of silk knickers for the big day:

I'm also planning on making my own invitations/table plan etc and have been working on designs for this with a graphic designer friend Smiley smile

    I love everyone's skills!

    I made my invitations:

and will also make orders of the day. The advantage of such a tiny wedding is I dont have to make very many!

Between myself and my mum we'll dry white petals for confetti. We're doing a picnic for lunch which I havent given much thought to yet so I'll maybe do some decorations for that.

Not strictly DIY maybe as we used someone else's facilities but we did do it all ourselves- our wedding rings!

I havent decided on favours yet but will almost certainly be DIY.

Thinking of trying to embroider a scarf/ pashmina for the evening.

Hmm, thats all I can think of for now but feel like I'm missing something glaringly obvious!

I made our invites, our favours (mint chocolate lollipops), centrepieces, table names, escort cards (which hung from silver branches to make a table plan), tags for the sweetie buffet, my jewellery, the BMs jewellery and hair combs, the cupcakes we had as a wedding cake and various signs and things like a poem for the sweetie buffet, a framed poem and photo of my dad and the menu for the cupcakes.

Gigglebert, i love that you're embroidering your own knickers! such a lovely idea! that would really surprise D when we're getting ready for bed ha ha ha.

Maybe we should keep bouncing this thread whenever we do something, or stumble across something we think others might like. I wonder if we can make it a sticky?

    Things we are making ourselves:

    Invites, table plan and OOD

Labels for wedding ale and liqueur

    Centrepieces complete with lighting halo

    Bouquets, fascinators, corsages & buttonholes

    Sporran.

I might get round to taking some pics and flashing at some point.

I have made those tea light jar things. I got friends to collect jars and used stickers (stars, big spots, masking tape) to do patterns before I sprayed them with the glass frosting. I then tied a ribbon around the top. Easy! I will try and get a flash on tonight!

I am making all of the decorations!

I have nearly finished making bunting from mis-matched fabric (if any of you plan on making 50 metres of bunting, allow months for this, I did, luckily, as it took three times longer than I thought!). No photos yet, but will flash when I have them.

I have also knitted a cream angora shrug. It's amazing if I do say so myself, but no pictures I am afraid. Will have to wait for wedding report (as it's at Mum's 200 miles away and I am not going back there now till 3 days before the wedding).

I do have things that I can flash though... we designed these invites... they are mugs that we already had and my OH took them to the park and took a photo:

I decided to make the ladies lavender heart favours, here are the ones I made as a trail (the others aren't finished):

I am also making the jam-jar lace lanterns. We are having 12 tables and am aiming to make 100. Have made 60 so far and waiting for more jam jars to roll in:

Finally, here is a flash of the table plan... I made it using fabric, tape, scrabble tiles, lace and an artsist's canvas. Each table will be listed on a large brown luggage tag and pegged on (a lot neater than the pegs are arranged now!)... use your imagination a little, but here you are:

Can't believe I forgot my favourite one... I designed and made some place cards. These are the bride and groom ones, the guests have mis-matched buttons on theirs:

Blimey, don't we have some talented folk on here?

We've started making our save the dates but that's it so far. We are planning on making all of the stationery though as well as cakes, favours, some signs and a few other bits and bobs.

Love all of these, clever peeps!

    HTB and I are are both very artsey and craftsey and have made or our making our own;

Invites and OoD - HTB did the artwork and I did the words (as a cartoonist and writer I think it was what people expected of us!!)

Wedding party gifts - caracatures and stained glass light-catchers.

Favour table goodies - two types of truffles, fudge, jam, bookmarks, wildflower seed packets, lollipops, cakepops, biscuits.

Wedding cake - I have made the bottom tier and top tiers will be made in a few weeks...

Gosh, lots of dedicated artsy people around here!

D wants to have a go at making the wire button hearts next weekend when i get home so might be able to upload a pic soon. I was thinking last night I might make one for each of our mums and grandmas and attach a little name tag saying D + E 25/08/2012 and use them as decoration during the reception and then hand them out afterwards.

We're making jars of jam for our favours, hoping to go and 'pick our own' raspberries some weekend soon.

We took a lovely pic of our venue to be used for our invitations - which we are doing through Vistaprint.

Other than that we are pretty uncreative I'm afraid ?

Some of you are amazing though!

Sparkly they are lovely, very understated.

Mellow, i wish i could make jam! I'm not too bad in the kitchen but things like jam etc tend to go wrong because i don't have the patience to stand there stirring endlessly. Like the time i made toffee apples. I did it perfectly, but i'm not doing it again. It took well on 45 minutes to get the toffee the right consistency! Tennis elbow doesn't even cover it...
