DIY WEDDING STATIONERY?

Morgan-Vaughan, 8 August, 2013 at 21:52 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi everyone,

We just booked our wedding last week Smiley smile We get married 20/06/15 Smiley smile

I feel like there's not a lot I can do so far in advance, but I'm keen to get cracking with Save the Date cards and would actually like to make those and our invitations myself.

My only problem is... I don't have an artistic bone in my body and have never tried to do any arts & crafts!!

Does anyone out there consider themselves to be amateur (or useless) at arts and crafts... and yet were you able to do your own invitations with some advice and guidance? If so... could you share some tips and techniques please? Or just let me know where your best source of information and tools was please?

Thanks so much for any help!!

Lindsey xx

Aha yes they look lovely!! See I had never even heard of glue dots Smiley smile

i think I'd like mine to be "rustic" style as my wedding is outside with wildflowers I hope!

I'm not very arty either but I'm in the process of making mine. Agree with keeping it simple, I can see how it could quickly become not worth the effort if you're not an expert. I've done quite a lot of shouting at the printer but think it will be worth it and satisfying when I've finished. Don't forget you might need to buy extra tools too e.g I had to go out and buy a guillotine which I didn't consider when I first decided to do it myself x

Ooh ok thank you. And do you think it's still been cost effective to make your own - even with the printer abuse and guillotine purchase? Smiley winking

also I see you are a Derbyshire bride!! Me too Smiley smile xx

Yeah I think it will definitely be worth it in the end. I got everything off eBay. Went into hobbycraft first and with their prices I'm not sure it would be worth it! Also now I've got the tools ready for invites later on. Yey, another Derbyshire bride, where are you from and getting married?

We are going for a rustic theme and i made the invites i think my pintest is pintrest.com/jesswelch1990 my friend does graphics so had a good design package to create the text but we then just printed them- on the front it says we are tying the knot and as it opens we had some garden twine with a loose knot which ties as you open the invite.

Yeah I think eBay has got to play a big part!! I went into hobbycraft at the weekend and I was in invite heaven but I was struck by how expensive everything is Smiley sad

Well I'm not from Derbyshire I'm from Walsall but we're getting married at Hartington hall which is in the peaks near Ashbourne or Buxton Smiley smile what about you? x

Ooh I just went and had a look at them, they're lovely! Close to the sort of look/theme I'm imagining too!!

do you mind me asking - what design package did you use? And when you say you printed them, did you have to use a special printer? See I told you I know nothing!! ?

My friend has an apple mac and i think just used their standard package, she has just graduated in graphic design so used them as part of her portfolio so it worked well for us both, i will try and find a pic of the real ones. If you have a windows computer and are on a budget i would put a word doc onto a landscape page, draw a line to split it into two and find some free font downloads online and play around like that.

We bought an all in one hp inkjet for £35 in tesco, i had an inkjet already but it wasnt the best and we needed all new ink for it so this was as cheap. Personally i wouldnt bother getting a laser jet, in my opinion it will cost you so much that you might as well have had them made. The inkjet did them fine because they are simple invites and standard card went through it fiine which was my only worry.

Hi Lindsey! I am not in the slightest bit arty! I consider myself pretty useless but I know my way around various graphics software so I made use of this. I am determined to have put some personal effort into my stationary! I made my save the dates myself, just simple post card ones but I also printed the envelopes to jazz them up as well. I just used Publisher as I could really easily set up the custom page sizes for the card and envelopes and I used Fireworks for editing graphics.

I had a quick go at a table card too, I already had a guillotine and discovered the wavy cutting option which I just had to use ? it's also got a perforating thing which I intend to utilise for the RSVPs in my invitations. I'm going to have a go at a mock-up of an invitation tomorrow.

I think it depends where you buy your materials as to how much or even if you save. As others have said; Hobbycraft is pretty expensive BUT I have spent ages wandering around in there finding little things to use then going home and finding them on eBay, it is great for inspiration. The one where I live has a dedicated wedding section and have some example creations displayed that I have picked up ideas from.

I think I saved quite a lot but I already had a very good printer and a very handy guillotine. If I had to buy those plus factoring in the time it takes me to make everything I'm not sure I will have made a huge financial saving but the main reason I wanted to make them was to make them personal rather than save money anyway. It's down to your personal preference really.

Here are my save the dates and quick table card example. (I need to fine tune the corners of the table card!) I apologise for the low quality photo but you get the idea:

I plan on having a go with ours even though I'm not that creative - I'm hoping that will add to the charm! Me and my OH are computer geeks so there'll be plenty of Googling and Youtubing going on to assist us. I don't even mind if we end up with something that looks like a child has made it...again it will add to the charm and will show our personalities ?

    Good morning

Have you ever thought about DIY kits? It may be the best of both worlds. Professional invites but made by you whilst having fun at home.

I have a new website currently under construction where these are available (only the homepage left to finish so ignore that ?) but your more than welcome to have a look what I mean. www.inspiremecreations.co.uk We can then discuss your very own kit if you would like to email me at *******@****************.**.**
