DIY Wedding stuff!

avintagebride, 19 September, 2010 at 21:20 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi everyone,

What are people making themselves? Need some inspiration for money saving as my Mother has decided I have to invite Great Aunty Mildred and all manner of long lost relatives I don't give a damn about so my budget is getting smaller. GRR!!!

I was thinking I could have a go at the invitations, but really do not know where to start!!!

    Hi

Firstly, if you are not that crafty then, in my experience, brides have wasted so much money on trying their hand at their own invitations and failing. Changing their mind etc all adds up when your trying to mock up your invitations. I can offer stationery from 80p each including envelopes depending on the design.

Have you thought about getting married on a weekday? That can sometimes save a huge amount of money. Making your own centerpieces etc. All the little things add up to give some nice savings.

Let me know if you would like any help.

    Nat

To be honest, I am really not crafty...Our venue doesn't discount weekday wedding from a weekend one with the special package we've managed to get, and the package includes flowers for all the tables, so I was just going to get cake stands or birdcages and incorporate the flowers in to them.

So from 80p for invitation and envelope is it? Could you send me some mock ups in a sage green and pink vintagey theme at all? X

These are a few of my DIY wedding bits:

I've not just saved money but really enjoyed having a creative input in the wedding and got exactly what I wanted. If I can DIY it then I generally have..

I am going to have a go at making my own bunting. I have a sewing machine sat here that I've used once but how hard can it be? (Gulp!). My MIL2B is going to make my table runners for me.

I am also making heart decorations out of my old books, so no cost there at all, just time consuming.

Candle jars with lace round them for table decorations. I got a load of lace off-cuts off ebay for a couple of quid and everybody is saving jars for me.

For favours for the ladies, I am making homemade Jam with apples from my MIL2B's apple tree and blackberries foraged from the lanes round my village. I have had some personalised favour labels printed from Vistaprint for the jars.

Also making my own bouquet out of buttons (Although it's not working out cheaper, but atleast it wont die!)

Vistaprint.co.uk is my biggest saviour in regards to stationery.. Soooooo inexpensive.

Other ways I'm saving money -

My bridesmaids will have very real looking bouquets which are cheaper than real flowers.

We are using an outside caterer - MUCH cheaper than in house caterers.

We are not having a formal sit down meal for the wedding breakfast, but a vintage afternoon tea.

We (although can't see Oh doning all that much although i will be happy to be proved wrong) are making/ using friends and family to

    -make all the stationary

-Hopefully make everythign that will go with the invites (I want a box with homemade jam and biscuits in delivered to everyone)

    - Decorate the wedding cake, getting one from M and S and then having it decorated

    - Having laods of cup cakes home made so these can go in with our buffet reducing the price

    - Making the favours, we are having soap and other things

    - All the bunting and decs, i am now a regular at every car boot near us

    - Not having a guest book but a wishing tree instead which we are also making

Infact when i think about it we are doing everythign apart from the flowers and food adn even then we ar econtributing some of the food and teh flowers are getting put into teh decs we have already got as there are very few formal arrangements. But i would agree that if you are not crafty then it may be cheaper to get someone else to do it, although i have been overwhelmed with peopel offering to help or just giving me the name of someone who could do such and such. Good luck xx

We are doing our own stationery, I'm making bouquets, corsages & buttonholes. I'm also making my OH a sporran to wear with his kilt - not any cheaper but a great project! My sister is doing my cake - it's cheaper to send her on a sugarcraft course than pay for a professional wedding cake.

If you want to do your own invitations why don't you look at some of the ready made designs on the web? plenty of inspiration there. I remember printing a load of birthday invites with and old black & white printer and me & my son coloured them in by hand - a nice touch if a bit time consuming.
