DJ costs?

mummy2hannah, 31 May, 2011 at 10:47 Posted on Planning 0 17

Morning Ladies,

I'm not meaning to be cheeky, but just wondering how much you's are paying for an evening DJ?

We're going to ask a friend of a friend to do it, but don't want to offer too much/less or be over charged. She used to do it for a few years at a venue near us so I know she has plenty of experience!

We paid £175 but most DJs around the W Midlands area quoted us between £200 - 295. Our venue recommended ours and we were really pleased as he was good and they saved us a bit of money.

Most of the quotes I had ranged from £250 to £550... we ended up with a friend of a friend for £170 and he was bloody awful, didn't play any of the songs we asked him to, kept making us do stupid drinking games and I think we ended up with about 3 first dances... he couldn't mix either, we would have been better off with an ipod...

We are paying £400 for our DJ (Manchester). Not sure if he's higher than others we considered (for this region) because he's not a wedding DJ, he's a "club" DJ. Maybe he has to hire some gear....should probably check this Smiley smile

Our chap would usually cost £600 but my brother sorted out all of the sound and lighting for us and paid him mates rates.

We got quotes which averaged £300, but we decided we would prefer a band and they said they could DJ too for £150 extra so we went with that. The band are fab so we are really pleased we could book them.

The price normally reflects the experience and service of the supplier.

As with any service (insurance/utilities/builders etc), get a few quotes and get a feel for the market price for what you need.

Unless you're comparing like for like, you'll always see a wide variation.

Ours was £250 which is high for this area but we both know him, and his discos (I grew up with him playing at many of our local ones!!) he did say on the night he should have offered mates rates but to be honest we were happy to pay him every penny because he's one of those people who knows everybody and knows some way to get them all up dancing and enjoying themselves - a lot of my guests have said to me since that ours was the best wedding they've been to in years and I'd say we have him to thank for a lot of that ?

I'd say if you can, find a DJ you know or one you can at least see in action before the day HTH xx

Thats how we've picked our DJ - I know him through various online discussion forums and have met him a few times, but Carmen took photos at one of his gigs (he paid her), and she was impressed.

Seeing most DJ's in action is not normally possible. Would you be happy if the DJ turned up with a few potential clients to your Wedding?

I do provide around 5 or 6 public parties each year, these are run totally differently to any Weddings, and I treat each Wedding differently.

In the last 2 weeks, one Wedding required lots of typical party music (Abba etc), the most recent was wildly different, with lots of modern chart and R&B.

If either client had been at the other party, they would not have booked me (one explicitly said "no Abba!", the other had requested 8 Abba tracks! lol).

Both parties were successful in that the Brides both were dancing all night to a busy dancefloor and thanked us multiple times during the night. The point is that most DJ's will tailor their services to the client. I can simply turn up and play music, but I'd much prefer to spend time understanding what is required on this important day.
