Do evening invitations need to be different?

Lynseys Designs, 19 November, 2008 at 20:58 Posted on Planning 0 40

I have a few ideas of what I want my day invitations to look like but I've not done any samples yet (it is on my to do list). However I have never understood why the evening invitations are different? Do they really need to be? Has anyone else used the same style/layout etc but just with different wording on the front?

I really don't know if I can be bothered trying to think of 2 different styles! Lazy yes, far too busy yes, uninterested yes, am I fed up with wedding planning yes!

The design of ours was the same, but the card was slightly smaller (only because I ran out of the bigger cards!) and only the wording was different. TBH, I've never been aware of people using a different design for the evening invitations.

    Hi Lynsey

If it's any help, generally all my evening invitation designs are the same as my day ones except for the cover text and inserts. The only difference is if my day invitations are of a portfolio style, but I usually make the evening ones in a more traditional card format incorporating the same design elements.

I personally think it's better if they are the same or very similar.

Laura and Zippy thank you so much! I now feel better ?. Do you have any pics to show? It has always been the norm in Scotland to have different invitations I think.

Sarah I'm just too busy for wedding planning. I was so excited at the start but now I just want the day to be here and enjoy it all. I've always been a bit like this though and I only stay interested in something for a short period of time and then get bored. For example I love buying cars so did it all the time because once I bought one and had it for a while I got bored so bought another (yes a very expensive hobby but it was my ultimate retail therapy, much better than a new dress). I'm also probably a little bit scared that I don't have a clue what else needs done so I'm burying my head and trying to aviod all wedding talk with everyone! I like being on here because I can talk when I want but mention 'wedding' to my mum and she goes into overdrive and drives me insane.

I wouldn't mind but he is sitting there on HIS laptop while we watch the footy.

How are you anyway? You've been quiet. Trying to be good and not hitch so much?

I don't have any pictures of invites, not made them yet. I have a picture of place cards to give you idea. They will be square pocket style,( like a cd sleeve), and have ribbon going across horizontally. with the rose mounted on a small piece of card. Here is the place card to give you an idea of design.

Meant to say also - Its fairly usual for different invites here too but I don't see why the evening guests should get a 'lesser' invite tbh. Also this way the envelope/info sheets etc can be the same for all.

Thanks everyone. Zippy yours sound really nice.

Suz I am seriously thinking I will be contacting you as this whole invitation stuff is making me hate wedding planning. Lisa also said that looking back although she saved money trying to run the business at the same time was hard going. My cbm and I will sit down and have a play around and then I can decide whether they will take too long to make and stress me even more. My cbm makes cards as a hobby (nothing like your stuff though) so she has all the equipment to hand but time is my main thing. I do love her heat gun but after 50 invitations I might be sick of it. She might even tell me the heat gun isn't the best thing to use but it's the only thing I know she has.

I know I want callas and thistles and do have an idea of what I'll do with them but the thought of what you could design really appeals. Watch this space...

Thank you Lynsey. I'm sure your cbm will do a fab job with you and you'll be more than pleased with the results plus it will be special to you,

but if you do get stuck I'm happy to help if you would like me too.

Ours were different but not in design, only in colour. When we eventually got them, my 'rents and the PIL all liked the evening ones better! ? The dark blue card was shimmery and really beautiful. Isn't captured properly in these pics, but it'll give you an idea.

    Hi Lyns,

Mine are nothing like what you'd be having but thought I'd share so you can see how I have just altered the day invitation slightly for the evening but without any more work really

Hi Lynsey, ours are going to be the same for day and evening obviously just with different text. I'm having roses and thistles on them but my brother's friend is a printer so he is printing them up for me and then I'm just going to add the decoration. Well thats whats going to happen in theory! I'm not a particularly crafty person but wanted to have a go at making something for the wedding!

Thanks girls. I like the fact you have made them different but still the same ifswim.

I'm less stressed now so thank you. I thought everyone was going to say 'of course they need to be different' and I'd be the odd one out having the same ones.

Laura I just said the same to h2b that I don't see why all day guests get the better invitation.

I would say most of mine (although not all) are the same style although the evening ones are quite often slightly smaller. The reason for this is because usually less information needs to be given to evening guests. Guests invited for the whole event could travel in for the occasion so you may want to include travel and directions as well as accommodation information where evening guests are usually local to the area so don't need it. Also being a bit smaller can save slightly on the pennies.

Ours were virtually the same - the day ones were square and the evening ones A6 size (I think), they didn't say anything on the front, but same design. The wording was only slightly changed on the inside - the evening ones didn't have the (only very slightly) more formal wording of the day ones but it didn't even occur to me to have something really different for the evening guests.

I just changed the wording from "Wedding Invitation" to "Evening Invitation" but kept the design the same - didnt really see the point of doing a different design and the wording inside was different too etc.

Probably comes down to costs more than anything, certainly with my brides.... if they can't afford to have the whole range the same because of costs, they tend to go for a slightly different evening invitataion to keep costs down - and tbh, an auntie or granny is more likely to keep their day invitation for a keepsake than someone you work with who gets an evening invitation ....

but I'm all for 'do what you want' for your wedding - stuff tradition and the 'norm'!!!

Hi Lynsey, ours will be the same for evening and day invitations although haven't a clue what that will be yet. So many sparkly things to choose from?

Mrs SP - Did you get any feedback from your first order?

Thanks for that. If I decide to make them then I'm going to do them all the same and just change the wording. I never thought that evening ones could cost less so that isn't an issue just the fact I only want to design one and I'd like everyone to have the same. I've bought all my bits and bobs and it didn't cost much at all but it is finding the time to make them that is worrying me more. Watch this space!

Yes yes!!! I've just made my very first invite as the ribbon finally arrived today!! The evening ones are exactly the same but the wording is different (obviously!)

What do we think? H2b likes them too - they are on lovely thick card... hope I love them as much when I have made another 100!!! ?
