Do you ever use door to door sales?

magicool, 26 June, 2008 at 20:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

I dont but my h has agreed that some bloke who knocked on our door earlier can clean all our windows tomorrow.

Im really nervous about this because

a) the bloke knocked and we have a sign on our door that says "we do not buy or sell at this door so do not knock"

b) he is only charging £10.. surely thats not enough to clean all our windows upstairs and down?? i dont know, ive never paid for windows to be cleaned before

c)im worried we dont know him from Adam and he is going to rob us blind.

When he turns up tomorrow, i just want to tell him to go away again but h wants him to do the windows.

Am I being stupid?

I've used door-to-door window cleaners before- it wouldn't bother me.

Re the price, there was a thread on here a while ago about the cost of window cleaners and lots of people posted that they paid £3 or something- really, shockingly low prices. Unless you live in a mansion, he'll be able to do it all within an hour- if you have a wipey sideways scraper thing it's really quick. £10 an hour doesn't sound so low- seems fine to me.

I don't know what the going rate is for windows but if you're worried, make sure all your blinds and curtains are drawn? I've heard of scams where people charge very little to clean your windows and they're actually just checking out what you have before coming back to burgle you or passing the info on. To be fair, this doesn't sound like that at all and if you're really worried - then make sure H is in when they call?

Our window cleaner only charges a fiver for our three storey, so a tenner really is ok. What the others said re drawing your blinds and curtains though?

    A tenner? ?

We pay £3 ? TBH it only takes them a few minutes so their hourly rate must still be pretty decent. We've had them for years and haven't been robbed yet.

I pay £3.30 to have the windows done and it is £6.60 in total if he does the conservatory (which is once a month). It only takes him about 15mins in total. I would make sure he has some form of insurance though just incase he causes any damage with his ladder etc. you don't want to be having to claim off your home insurance

Our window cleaner charges £5 inc conservatory windows so £10 seems a bit pricey to me!
