Do you know what a 'Moggy' is?

Hugo Brambles, 16 December, 2008 at 23:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I did an interview today for my pet related business (I look after cats when people go away) and the journalist was very intrigued by the name of my business as it contains the word 'Moggy'. He had no clue what it meant and I had to explain it was slang for cat (or a cat of no specific breed). Is this a regional word?? I thought it was pretty well known as on my cats insurance moggy is one of the breed options.

I always thought it was pretty much universally known - nothing regional about it at all.

Definitely know what a moggy is. What planet does he live on? They're mogbags in our house, but same thing.

Um yeah. Seems very strange that someone wouldn't know what it meant tbh.

Moggy = cat in the same way Mut = dog.

I've always known it as a slang term for cats as the way a slang term for a dog is a mut.

? Oh that's ok then! It just struck a cord with me as a couple of years ago someone else said they knew the word 'moggy' as a slang for mice.

One of my cats is called Moggie.

He's black and white with a Hitler moustache - he's wonderful!

I'm presuming he never read the 'Meg & Mog' books when he was younger...

"A slang name for a cat. A cat of indeterminate breeding.
Moggy or moggie (plural moggies) is a British affectionate term for a domestic cat, but is also used as alternative name for a mongrel or mixed ...
    a domestic non-pedigree cat"

My marmite's a moggy...that's what her insurance & vet details say

I'm not an animal person at all, but I do know that a moggy is a cat. Surely someone who's a journalist would be well read enough to know that?

Very odd. I think moggy = pooch rather than mutt though.
