Do you tip your hairdresser?

cherry_bomb, 10 May, 2009 at 13:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

And do you also tip anyone else in the salon ie the person that washed your hair?

I'm pretty sure that you're supposed to, but I've always found doing it a bit awkward, so I tend not to - I'm not sure if this is really rude, or if quite a lot of people actually don't tip. I think the reason I find it awkward is because it isn't as completely expected as it is in restaurants, where more often than not now service is included in your bill, so I'm not completely sure on the etiquette. Also, because I'm quite good friends with my hairdresser, and as he always takes my money at the till afterwards, I'd just find it weird going "oh and here's an extra £3 for you and can you give £2 to x (junior girl) as well" £2-3 seems like almost an insult as a tip, but if I did do it I'd be unlikely to give more than £5 as my cut is £45 so I'd probably just round it up to £50.

Am I being tight, or am I over-thinking this and it's actually fine?

I have never tipped my hairdresser. I feel a bit guilty about that now, but it's not something I've ever associated with going to the hairdressers. Restaurants, yes but not the hairdressers.

I came up against similar thoughts when I recently went to the hairdresser here as I had no idea to the etiquette of whether I should or not. In the end I didn't as to be honest I was relieved to get out of their and didn't look for a pot.

No but then for the past 4 or so years I have used the salon owner and they don't have any juniors. I also find it a bit difficult as I always pay by card and they have normally already put the amount in. I do tend to take her a bottle of wine at Christmas.

Always. I tip my hairdresser and any junior that washes my hair.

I do tip my hairdresser. She's lovely, I only go occasionally but she does my mum's hair too a lot more often and always remembers what my mum's told her has been happening with me recently which impresses me. It's never occurred to me to tip whoever washes my hair though, I wouldn't have a clue what their name was, it only takes a few minutes and there's no chat.

I'll start tipping people when I get tips in my job - which isn't ever going to happen.

I usually make a point of having cash on me so I can tip. I give £10 and ask hairdresser to split it with hair washing girl

I usually tip 10%, but as the hairdresser tends to be the one who washes it too, it all goes to her. I tip the same to the girls who cut my boys hair too.

Actually thinking about it, I think I'm quite good at tipping. I usually tip 10% in restaurants and then it's up to them how they divvy that up. I usually round up the takeaway bill to the delivery driver, last night got £1.80 which worked out at about 10% too.

I was mortified last week when we went to a local pub restaurant and had an outstanding meal. We only had a card on us, so meant to ask them to add a tip onto the bill, but it was only a few days later that I realised I'd forgotten. So next time I go they'll get a good tip to make up for it.

I tip the stylist and colourist (when I have a colour) but not the junior.

Yes, I tip both. My hairdresser sees me out at the door and I hand her some cash as I leave and some coins for the person who washed my hair.

TBH, although I started tipping without knowing what the impact would be, it is now financially worth my while. My hairdresser will always find time to get me an appointment even at the last minute, books me in during the discount time periods, calls me if there is an offer on colour, will tidy my fringe for free if I'm just in for a colour. All this means she helps me save more money than I pay in tips and makes it much more convenient for me. As she knows I tip the person washing my hair, she also gives me one who gives a great head massage (which I luuuurve).

Hmm, seems like about half and half - Redbedhead, a bottle of wine at christmas sounds like a good idea so perhaps I could do that instead. I think if for some reason I started going to a new hairdresser I'd tip them, but it seems like it would be odd after going to him for 3 years to suddenly start tipping IYSWIM? Although with my hairdresser, a gram of class A drugs would probably be more appreciated than wine ?

Nope, I don't ever tip. I'm paying for a service and I expect that to be covered in the cost. The same person that cuts usually washes my hair too. Can't say I've ever thought about tipping.

I'm not a huge tipper in restaurants though either.

It's customary to tip over here - 15-20% so I give my stylist $12 and the girl who washes my hair about $5.

That would be 40% of the cost of my cut. Never going to happen. ?

There is only the owner and one girl where I go, i've always left a tip, usually 20% but he is really cheap.

I have the owner wash, colour and cut my hair, and I don't tend to tip. Mainly because I pay by card and never have any cash on me.

I do give a tip at Christmas and as I work for a chocolate company I tend to take chocolate with me to keep the girls well fed!

MrH and I have the same person cut our hair and we get a double appt so she does him while I have my colour then she does my cut. We tip her £20 for both of us. I think the total is usually £75 for two cuts or £120 if I have a colour too. Then £20 tip on top of that. She is completely fabulous though, I think we both have a tiny crush on her so I don't mind!

My hairdresser also owns the business and doesn't even have a tip box. I think I stopped tipping hairdressers a few years ago when the cost went over £50 for a cut. It's less now so I also take stuff from work - used to be biscuits, now it's toothpaste & shower gel which recently went down extremely well.

No, never and I've been going to the same place for 10 years. It costs a fortune (£85ish every 8 weeks). That is a lot of money to me so tipping on top of that is not going to happen.

I've always tipped my hairdresser, but a higher percentage since moving here.

I give my hairdresser here 20%, and he is the owner too. And Scottish! And gay. Goes by the name BJ! He's a scream! Well worth the 20% IMO ?

I think i've tipped my hairdresser maybe twice in the time i have been going to her. I don't tend to have cash on me. She is leaving for Australia in July; thats another good hairdresser i've had upsticks on me!

I usually leave a tip of 10%. I don't specify for it to be shared with the girl who washed my hair though, I've always assumed that the hairdressers take care of that at the end of the day? Am I being naive?

My hairdresser is a lovely girl, but she charges as a 'style director' now so i can't afford to tip on top of the £130 odd it costs for a cut, colour and blow dry. I usually give her £20 at christmas. Same with my beautician. Not sure i know anyone who tips their hairdresser.

When I go to the salon I usually tip a fiver and ask the hairdresser to split it with the shampooist. At Christmas I give them a fiver each. However, now my SIL is training to be a hairdresser and refuses to accept payment when she does mine, I tip her £20 or treat her to something ?

I give the cashier £10 and ask for it to be split between my colourist and stylist. I asked my friend who owns a Toni & Guy salon about the youngsters who wash your hair and she said don't bother, they get looked after by the others by way of drinks when they go out together to compensate for the fact they don't get tips.
