Genitals!

I have been on Sex and relationship ed training today and one of the discussions centred around the language we use for our genitals, some said they had never heard the correct terms used by their parents and did not use them with their own children. Some were quite against young children using the words penis and vagina.

What do you call yours (now or as a child, to your own children etc)

Do you think children should use the correct language?

The children in my class (Year 2) use the terms tail and fairy. I remember when I first moved to the North East and was unfamiliar with the terms - a girl in my class said that X had been showing off her fairy to everyone. My response was 'X hasn't got a fairy, what are you talking about?' It's a good job I didn't ask her to show it to me ?

Another 'front bottom' here - my Mum's words.

On a slight tangent (as always) a wee was called a 'stream' and a poo was a 'jobbie'.

When I was little we used vagina and willy/penis. Yes vagina isn't anatomically correct but it is understandable and like others I prefer it to vulva. When we have children we will use the same language I expect.

I can remember my friend being horrified (at the age of about 6-7) that I called it my vagina - her name for it was a mini mousse?!

It is a shame we don't have a word like willy for female bits - I don't know why but fanny seems too adult to me for me to want to teach it to a child. I read a horrid article once about a girl who called it her 'butterfly' - she kept telling people her butterfly was hurt and no-one understood her (her father was abusing her). That for me is plenty enough reason to use 'proper' (or as close as) words for things.
