Do you work from home?

*Mini*, 17 September, 2014 at 19:11 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

I officially don't work from home, most of my role requires me to be in meetings or interviews face to face so being a homeworker would make that hard. Despite that I often will find myself surreptitiously logging on to do odd bits of work over the weekend or when I get in. I don't mind doing it, it saves me being stressed over huge workloads and I probably wouldn't be using my time very productively anyway if I wasn't doing it.

Can you do your role from home? If not do you think it would be better or worse if you could do it from home? Would you get more done or are you better in the work environment?

(this post is sponsored by Outlook which is refusing to allow me access to my emails and by excel which is deciding its having compatibility issues so wont let me update any bloody formulas)

Can you do your role from home? No.

If not do you think it would be better or worse if you could do it from home? Worse.

Would you get more done or are you better in the work environment? It's not so much the social environment as the need to have a bazillion pounds worth of equipment available in order to do my job.

He he. The office part of my job (writing manuscripts, grants, etc) I could easily do from home, and sometimes do so. The lab part of my job where I scan an embryo every 10 mins using a laser microscope to see how its nerves are growing, less so.

I can work from home and am set up tp be so.

But I was a bit of work-head/stresshead and would frequently log on in the evenings to keep up and help stress levels

Doesn't putting it on the window sill in the sun help it grow faster?

I can and do work from home as I work in IT so can remotely log in to my work account and do 95% of what I can do in the office but given the choice I probably wouldn't (unless I had no car and couldn't get in - I work 20 miles away so not having a car is a massive issue which would require me to work from home)

This is mainly because although all I need is a PC and a decent broadband connection to do my job, I also need to speak to people and Skype can only go so far. Plus I like the social aspect of the office and I find I get so much more done there than at home, even though we chat. It's so much easier to procrastinate at home! I've occasionally worked from home and found it ok but I wouldn't want to do it every day.

Also my cats never leave me alone when I'm home. In fact in the past I've had cats laying on work laptops and all sorts and it's so hard to work around a big ball of fur!

No, think it might be a little challenging!

H does it two days a week though, and I think he struggles to compartmentalise work time and home computer time. It's nice to have him around but I'm not sure that he gets as much done as he would in the office - don't tell his bosses!

Yes I could work from home and sometimes do. Most of my work is desk based. Most of my meetings care useless drivel. But today I was in a stem cell lab looking at neurons through a microscope with one of my donors. Now that is fab.

Can't take the lab work home (for obvious reasons) not allowed to take a lot of the paperwork home, and the stuff I could I most definitely wouldn't! The more you do, the more you're expected to do, which would screw me over. Plus, I am very easily distracted at home, ooh look, hitched/say yes to the dress/wandering around the internet for no reason, so I wouldn't get anything done anyway!

Technically I could do all my job from home, but I would lose the relationships I have built up in the office - both socially and work orientated

No, I work on the phones so it wouldn't be possible. For what they pay me, I get annoyed with myself if I even find myself thinking about work between 5.30pm and 9.30am. If I could work from home I suspect I'd get very fat and spend a LOT of time on Twitter.

I could do my job, no problem, from home. I may need to go into the office for some meetings but we've got a quite good web meeting/sharing tool I could use. I'd definitely be able to focus better on what I was doing on my own, as you all know my working environment is 'challenging' so without the constant noise that they make, I'd work so much better. Actually doing it though would be another matter.

I work from home, & according to my contract I can work up to 80% at home, but i reality i do maybe 2 days at home on a good week. my employer (a council) introduced home working as part of cost cutting measures I think they wanted to rent out some of their office space to bring in a revenue. It has been introduced throughout the council regardless of your job. My personal view is that I shouldn't be encouraged to homework nor should my team because it is not conjusive to providing a front-facing customer service.

I'm also a bit conflicted about it thought because I get interrupted at work ALL the time so it gives me the peace & quiet I need & it gives me the opportunity to finish early which I rarely do when in the office or if I feel a bit iffy I can still work but not have to be around people. But I also don't like that my work invades my home life as I struggle to switch off. X

Most of my day is spent in patient's homes. I could do my paperwork at home if I had remote computer access but I wouldn't really want to, I'd miss the social aspect of being with my colleagues and I think I'd get far too distracted by TV/Facebook.

I think I could work from home for part of the month but really I do need to be in the office for when issues arise. Sometimes it involves looking at drawings with other people.

Also, we aren't really geared up to work from home as a company. No one really does it so if one person were to it would make it quite difficult if that makes sense.

I'd also be richer if I worked from home, as I'd not need to send my dog to doggy daycare!

I work for an IT company and have a laptop so it's really easy for me to work from home. I don't tend to do it often, as its useful having the phone line in the office, plus it's nice to talk to people! I work at home if I have a docs/dentist appointment etc as I live 20 miles from work, so it'd take me ages to do a round trip.

Because I only do it occasionally I find my productivity at home increases as I have less distractions, although I don't end up having a lunch break etc and work extra. The cats love it when I'm at home though. Laptops are fun toys.

I would love to be able to have a day or two a week where I could work from home because I work with a right bunch of selfish, noisy idiots. But I fear that all the systems we use and all the personal data we handle would make it a mine field.

In a previous role I bought work home with me, and it made me stressy about work at home and a right cow, so now, as soon as I leave the office, I switch off.

I probably could do some of my work from home, if I had a printer and company mobile phone. But it wouldn't be practical to work from home often.

It's probably a good thing that I don't work from home though, I'd never get anything done! As it is I spend a fair amount of my working day on here but at home I'd just be watching tv all day!

I work from home - it's in my contract that I'm home based. i've worked from home for around the last 3 years and i have a love hate relationship with it. i work in sales, so all I need is my laptop, phone and a pen and paper Smiley smile. Some days I'm mega productive as I can make cold calls without worrying people can hear me *** up, other days not so much...

I do like being able to get up at 8.45am though for a 9am start but then again I feel guilty when I log off at 5.30pm. I've only been in my new role for 4 weeks so I am taking this as the calm before the storm.. Smiley smile

Oh and my office is about 1hr 45 mins away so makes it a little too long for commuting...

My H works from home a lot. Not by choice, but his line of work (recruitment) means he doesn't really have set office hours. He'll often be making/receiving phone calls at 10pm.

It isn't easy for him to work from home, as our 3 yr old makes it hard for my H to make phone calls, and to concentrate on his work.

Am fairly certain that I would get into serious trouble if I bought the babies home from work! I can do some paperwork bits from home, but on the whole, my job is hospital based.

I can easily work from home apart from client meetings. The office is now paperless so I can access client files wherever I am. In reality I only work from home now occasionally as I need to manage the team too. I work from home every other Friday as I need to be in Yorkshire and my new firm only has London offices.

In the last couple of years at my previous company I wasn't client facing and my team was in London so I worked from home in Yorkshire 3 days a week and 2 days in the London office. I worked better in that role from home as I found the Leeds office too noisy - it was massive open plan. Also as I wasn't actually working with anyone there no-one really knew who I was so I was given a crap desk. Plus I was often having phone calls about confidential stuff so I was having to find free meeting rooms to have the calls. At home I had the spare room set up as an office so I didn't have any problems with being distracted by the tv etc. I would go in there and shut the door, put the radio on. It just meant my commute was about 5 mins! Oh and the cats loved it when I worked from home. It was also much more flexible. As long as I did my daily hours I could go the gym at lunch when it was quieter or in the summer out for a run. I ate less as there were no snack machines waving at me everytime I passed.

There were times when I was single though - for example some weeks in the bad weather when I didn't get down to London, when I would work from home all week and have no conversations with anyone other than friends and family at night. Lots of email contact but no real 'how are you' kind of chats and I found myself becoming really quiet outside of work too. It was like I was losing the ability to make small talk. It was quite lonely. Even my friends commented on it. Much happier client facing and working with a full team even though it is more stressful and the commute is a pain.

Haha same with me as l can't bring my patients home. I can't really do paperwork either because of confidentiality and l can't access our computer system from home. Mind you the patients with OCD would be handy for helping with the cleaning and the tidying at my house...
