Does anyone else suffer migraine after exercise?

Consuela Banana Hammock, 19 December, 2008 at 12:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I've been suffering from migraines after my Personal Training sessions at the gym. Not every time (and interestingly not after any other session that I do) but out of 10 PT sessions, I've had five migraines.

I've done some reading on the internet about possible causes ("Exertion migraine" apparently) and there a few things I can try to prevent them but I was wondering if anybody else had suffered from these and what, if anything, you found helped you?

Dehydration could be a huge factor CBH, I know it can contribute to my migraines (even though I don't get them under the same circs as you).

I always keep hydrated before, during and after my workout and I *thought* I was eating enough beforehand too. It seems not. You're spot on Atticusred - it's the blood sugar thing. So I'm going to try dextrose energy tablets before and an Oat Baked Bar afterwards - right afterwards before I drive back home.

The internet also said about taking two Ibuprofens "preventatively" beforehand as well so thought I could take those when I have my pre-workout lunch.

Other than that, I'm at a loss to know what else to try but will see if these measures work.

Are you drinking water or a sports drink? I use a Sports Science drink mix that you can pick up in Tescos (or on the interweb) and make it up at the gym, which might help. And for beforehand I swear by plain bagels or a banana - salty peanuts and dried fruit work well too. I don't have migraines but I do have low blood pressure so I have to be a bit careful.

BTW I did a spinning class for the first time about a month ago - it was fab but I was such a sweaty betty afterwards!

I just drink plain water but I do make sure I have protein before I workout.

What I find so frustrating is I'm trying to lose weight as well as tone up and the last thing I wanted to do was eat MORE but I guess, for this one session a week which is affecting me, I'm going to have to.

I think bananas are a really good idea Seraphina - it really wouldn't hurt me to make sure I have some of those in the house too. Thanks for that idea. Will add them to the list! ?

I was getting exertion headaches. Just like you - only when doing PT sessions, not when working out myself. For me, it wasn't insufficient water or food/protein, but not breathing properly. My PT works me much harder than I work myself. I was exerting myself so much when working with him that I wasn't breathing properly. As soon as we focused on breathing in and out fully at all times the headaches cleared up. If I couldn't maintain proper (ie slow, full and no doubt annoyingly for other gym users, slightly noisy) breathing we lowered the exertion level.

Oddly, my friend who also works with a PT, suffered from the same thing about 3 weeks earlier than me. She went to a neurologist, who did multiple tests on her and diagnosed exertion headaches. Again, breathing properly sorted it out for her.

Hope you sort it out - it's really annoying to put the effort of exercise in, only to be hit with a headache!

I don't think it's related to my cycle, no.

But I think Dopper might have something - I have an horrendous time struggling to breathe on the cardio equipment when she's pushing me. In fact, the other week she even asked me if I was asthmatic! ? I work at "8 out of 10" of my full capacity so does that mean I have work less hard? I mean I can fiddle about with my diet/hydration but I don't want to have to work less hard.

This is rather embarrassing but I was suffering from something similar during sex ?

Breathing helped absolutely loads, and thankfully the problem eventually just went away.

I get migraines if I don't hydrate properly before and after running. Drinking water alone isn't enough because it doesn't replace the salts you lose with sweat. Sports drnks or rehydration sachets do the job and the rehydration sachets have barely any calories in.

Our gym sells sports drinks in reception so I'll pick one up on Tuesday when I'm next at PT and give that a go instead of water. Thanks. I'm willing to pretty much try anything!

Geekypants - you must have having very energetic sex, that's all I can say! ?

It was laughable really, had it not been so annoying, but Google indicated that it was a smiliar kind of thing, and had it not gone away, I would have totally gonee to a doctor.

    Hopefully sports drinks help you!

If you do find an improvement, we buy packs of 4 from Asda or Tesco at around £1.50 - you'll probably find they're quite expensive (£1 a bottle at my gym). We also buy lucozade powder, which is expensive but lasts us a while. It's great at getting me hydrated quickly if I drag myself out for a run in the morning.
