Does anyone have premium bonds?

Carrot, 17 August, 2008 at 20:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

If so, roughly how often do you win something? Would you say that bonds held for 37 years with only one small win approx 18 years ago were extremely unlucky?

I've had premium bonds since my birth - bought as a present.

I'm almost 32 and have won £50 once in that time. My brother is 18 months older and has never won anything.

I wouldn't say you were unlucky, no.

Premium bonds are one of the poorest long term investments there are. always have been.

My daughter inherited a small amount 6 months ago and put 2K in bonds. She has won twice since then. I think that some numbers are "lucky" whilst others are not........not a scientific answer, although sometimes this seems to happen....

My parents bought £500 for my son when he was born and in 7 years he has won £500. I think we have been very lucky.

I think they are a 'nice' thing to buy for someone but they are not a good investment.

I've had a couple of the smallest denomination available at my birth (I'm thinking a pound?) and I won £50 when I was seven.

Not a great investment but at least you can always get your money back so you don't make a loss!!

but you do make a loss on average, since they dont keep up with inlation. the longer you have them, the greater the loss.

Thanks for the replies! Nick, I agree they're a poor investment- mine were a present when I was born.

The thing is, people now buy up to the current limit (which I think is £30000), and if you look at the list of big winners at the start of the month on teletext (where they give the winning numbers and the size of holding of the winner) they nearly always have a large numbers of bonds. I used to be quite lucky, but haven't won for about 15 years or more and I hold £303 (I think!). My mum has the max amount and she gets something most months and she reckons her return is better than having the money in the bank.

I won £50 17 years ago with the bonds bought when I was born. Nothing since. My friend, on the other hand, bought £3K worth last year and won 5 months in a row (4 x £50 and 1 x £100 I think) - she hasn't won for about 6 months though and is disillisioned ?.

I agree they're not a good investment. My children have £100 each, bought for them by my grandmother, but they've yet to sniff any cash.

I have £16ish since 1972 and have nothing. Moneysavingexpert.com and NickJ! slate them for very good reasons! However, I refuse to get rid of them with them being such a low amount.

I had some bought for me when I was born - 1975 - and have had nothing. My mum used to have a small win every year or so but hasn't had anything for ages.

My H and I each had the maximum amount for approx 7 months. We won every month, bar one. However, we only ever won £50, £100 or £150, so it wasn't worth it.

When we transferred the money into a high interest savings account, we made 4 times what we were getting from the bonds.

It was nice to dream for those 7 months though!

I used to have quite a lot and won most months but like the others have said it was only small amounts. Spent most of it now though [:I]
